89 Jeep Help

I have a question about what happen to me this week. I changed one of the hoses on the power steering pump and had to remove the air cleaner to do so. Now, the Jeep sat for 2 weeks prior to me finishing this job and when I went to give it a test drive, the Jeep will not shift out of first. If I let up on the gas while is going in first it will sometimes slip. Reverse is fine and I never had a tranny issue with this jeep. Change that, off and on for about 2 years the jeep will buck sometimes usually on the highway after taking an exit and then pressing on the pedal to speed up. I've learned to shut the vehicle off and then on and it immediately stops bucking. But this only happend once in a while. Can anyone offer any ideas what to check for? Or is it time for my jeep to visit the junk/grave yard.

I'm guessing it's an automatic? If it is I would suggest that you put in low and then start driving then shift manually to second and the to drive and see if it shifts. Post results here.

Hey Mr. Bill, thanks for the reply. I have tried this and it just stays stuck in first. And yes, it is an automatic. What a time for it to break, couldn't it have waited a year or ten?

It sounds like an electrical problem in the trans. Have you checked/cleaned all of the connectors going to the trans? Also you should go to this link: http://www.lunghd.com/Downloads_and_Links/FSM.htm and download the FSM for the 1988 XJ. It will have troubleshooting info on the trans (and everything else too!)

Thank you for your help again Mr. Bill. I have not checked the electical connections going to the trans but I will will the help of the online manual you linked me. That is great! Is this only "part" of a sevice manual? I have a haynes and I think theres more info in that file then in my book. I am going to try what you said probably on the weekend and will report the results. I really appreciate the help.

Sorry to hi-jack this but how close is the 88 fsm to a 90 ? anyone know of a link for a 90 fsm ?

Lou- That is a full FSM so it will cover alot more than either Haynes or Chilton. I'll wait to read how it goes.

It is for a 93 so you will have to compare the 2 and see which one is closest.

I have some links to BMW manuals since that is my other daily driver (sometimes I like to go fast around corners!) besides the XJ. If you let me know what vehicles you need manuals for, I'll see if I can find links forthem.

Because time is critical and right now that is something I don't have alot of yesterday I dropped the jeep off at my brother-in-laws friends garage. He is in the transmission business so I said "what the hell". I just got off the phone with him and he told me evrything checked out so far and that he will drop the pan as the next step tommorrow. I will keep you and other menbers informed on the findings. Mrbill3 if you happen to find any other files with these vehicles I would be forever in your debt.

I had problems with my Jeep tranny and had to change out the Throttle Position Sensor. It worked just fine after that.

P.S. Did you check all your vaccum lines?
