Oil Problem

I think I may have put too much oil in my car. The oil gauge was below half so I thought I was just low on oil, so I put 3 quarts in. Just today I was on the high way and started to smoke. Pulled off and just let it cool down. I dont know if I blew a seal or anything but.. do you think I did anything I am going to have to fix?

What's your oil gauge read at? Sitting in park/neutral, the engine should be idling at or around 900 rpm's and reading 40 psi. What type of oil did you use? The 3.4 should always get 4 quarts of 5w-30. Nothing more, nothing less. I'd also like to mention that the oil pressure falling lower than 40 psi is perfectly normal. Mine does it all the time from stop to go. It should increase with your rpm's somewhat. ex: sitting at a light, falling below 40 psi is normal... go 45 mph, it should read around 40 psi. Also check you fresh air tube (the black thin tube running from your intake elbow to your left cylinder head). Had the rubber part that attaches to the cylinder head come out once and started smelling some smoke from the hot oil on the valves. Popped it back in and it was fine.

I would suggest draining your oil and putting in 4 new quarts. You may have way too much oil in your engine now. You should research your engine a little bit so you know what is and isn't normal. I have a factsheet I've been building up over time about the 3.4L and other misc. things about the car that are good to know. I'll e-mail it or PM it to you if you're interested.

you put about 2.5 quarts too much in it, your crankshaft is probly spinning in the oil and has a rediculous ammount of windage in the crank case which would lead to poor lubrication. the dipstick marks represent one quart, if its up to the full line you have the reccomended 4-4.5 quarts of oil, lets say 4 quarts. when the oil level is down to the half way mark, it means you are .5 quarts low, not 2 quarts low. so yes, you put in wayyyyy too much oil. i reccomend you let it sit overnight to drain the oil down, then drain out all your oil, youprobly have 6.5 quarts in there now, and then put in the reccomended ammount and check it.

Yeah...ditto to all of that....By putting too much oil in it starts to dribble out of the valve cover seals. Not a good thing but not the end of the world. It happens all the time when you go to some quick lube shops and dont have a clue and they put too much in.

you should check the oil level as you put in the oil. Pour in 3/4 of a quart then check the level again, keep doing that until it's where it should be. Simple.

Ok, I drained all the oil last night and put 4 fresh quarts. Everything seems to be just fine now. Just under 5 qurats came out. Thank you all for the help.
