i have had the same problem... i just put a power switch on it and turn it on when i need the fan on... can't figure any other way...maybe its your fuses...check to make sure they are the right size... or the thermostat... i don't really know ..but i did see something about it on some thread here or on miata.net?? dont remember...

If your temp/coolant sensor at the base of the thermostat is operational (check the wire connector as well as the actual sending unit), and you still have the problem, check the cooling fan relay in the underhood fuse/relay box. If that tests as functional, suspect a leak from the sealing nipple underneath the intake manifold/passenger side. This rubber nipple will often crack, and allow a slow coolant leak---this in turn lowers the coolant level past the sensor in the head, and will in turn fail to close the coolant sensor, and, in turn, the fan relay. If your overheating is creeping slowly into the hot zone, and you are loosing a small amounts of coolant, and the engine only overheats at low rpm and city stop and go driving, this is most likely the problem. Don't neglect to check for a faulty thermostat before you do anything else!
