i'm a newbie and don't have specific parts listed because i can have somebody help me out with that later.
thanks.

that would be alot of time and money to spend on a sixer, do you have any internal mods planned, if not that turbo and nitrous would most likely kill the motor, and with all you want to do with weight reduction it wouldnt be a very cmofortable street car, or is it for drag racing?
Hypsi87

that performance mod list sounds alot like the same performance mod lists off of gran turismo 3.... LOL
What exactly do you mean by "Extreme Performance Tires"

sorta for both, but what internal mods could you suggest to help? and the weight reduction was just an idea, not really too worried about the weight so much. also i was thinking of a supercharger instead of a turbo. is there a big difference, which is more effective, and does anyone have a big preference? also can the sixer go from 5-speed to a 6-speed?

it does sound like from gt 3, but i did a little research and had some of my dad's friends help me out. the extreme performance tires was something i saw on forum that someone suggested to help with handling.

to put either a supercharger or a turbocharger on that car your looking at prolly investing over 8 grand by the time you are said and done with everything.
Go buy a real z28. If you want v-6 performance go buy a Grand National or a 1989 Turbo Trans Am.
unless you are a big fan of spending a ton of money to maybe run with a lightly modded 5.0 mustang.

i planned on spending like $15k on everything not including the car and whatever audio/visual upgrades. that is only an estimate of what i might spend, not actual.

man, throwing money at a car does not make it fast.
Make sure you have the right platform and engine to do this with. A NA v-6 is not a very good performance platform to whip out 15 grand.
to spend that much money on a six popper F-body is nuts.
you might be in the 11's
take an LT1, L98, LS1 1989 TTA and do the research and use 15 grand wisely on a them, you will be scared shitless.
in short, you are willing to spend 15k on something that a turbo Buick guy like me or an LS/LT1 guy would spend 5 grand on and smoke the car you want to build.
I am not trying to shoot down your dreams here man but, I hate to see someone spend alot of money for nothing.

did they even offer the 3.4L in 98????? and did they call it a Z28, and did they offer a five speed manual????
dude in all honesty i dont think you have a clue what car you have and what your drivetrain is. you need to find out your basics before you plan any modifications.
also i agree with hypsi in that if you dont have a reason to stick with a sixer (some of the guys on the forum love their six bangers and choose them because they are different) but if you are looking for performance, you would be better off selling your current car and buying a better starting point.
i dunno, but something about this tread dosnt make alot of sense......

i realize that we get novices in here from time to time, and i try to be patient with them, however from the time that ive been here, i have certain spider senses, and im smelling troll. its very rare to have a novice show up who gets that much wrong, and then as hypsi so elequently put it, put down a Gran Turismo style list of mods, and has 15k worth of money to spend, its just all a bit much to accept without it being a bit fishy.

I'm glad I saw you said this :sunglasse
Myself, I have the v6 because of gas and insurance... but I guess it's just a NJ thing 3 of the fastest v6s are here and I know two of them... theres a damn bug biting me to kill some v8's with my 6
THis post is definately a troll BTW. Besides fromt he fact that no z28 was a v6 and the 3.4 was only 93-95 (ys there was an m5 offered on all v6's 93-02)... anyone see how he wants the "larger diameter downpipe" and how the wieght reduction takes nothing off the front of the car where it matters the most? None of the other crap adds up too... you should just give me the 15 grand and I'll spend it on my 97 :naughty:

i just got the car and those were the specs that the previous owner gave me and i half way believed him, but the thing was dirt cheap and looked decent enough. plus i don't know much about camaro’s and the list was something that a friend suggested. he said it couldn't be done and if so, he would still burn me in his ricer. also i like sixers, not too keen on v8's and the $15K i've been saving up on since like i was 10 yrs old. sorry if the list sounds like something from a video game, but I got help whether it was legit help or not.

man u need to find out what u own before we can help u. if its a v6 car when u look at the engine it should say on it as big as day 3800 series 2. that will be (series 11) not eleven but to romen numeral ones.if it dont say that than its a v8. it sure aint a 3.4, even if it was wrecked and replaced with a new engine, the front ends are different the 3.4 wont go in there without alot of fabrication. as for that list of mods, take 5 or 6 grand out of what u have, and buy u a crate ls something and 6 speed tranny, hell from there all u will need is some head work, a cam, new exhaust, and a power adder like a blower and u are in there. hell i didnt even spend that much on moding out my 6 and i did alot, hell my ls6 swap wont cost me that much.

well, i apologize if you are legit, we just get alot of people "trolls" who come in and make bogus threads just to be pricks, and alot of times they will have a car thats all mixed up like the one you described and ask how to modify it.
Write down your VIN number, and post it here, and maybe we can get a better idea of what we are dealing with. specifically the 8th digit of the VIN will tell us what engine you have. we can also tell what year the car is, and if someone wants to run to the dealership the parts counter can print up a spid sheet with all your optios listed on it. thats probly the best way to go. Write down your VIN, go to the dealership, have them print up the sheet, and then post back with your year, engine, and transmission, also check your spid codes for the code G80, which would determine if you had positraction or not.

ok, you dont seem to understand, we need to know WHICH six cylender you have in order to give you advice. the 3.4 and 3.8L engines are completely different, and parts for one will not fit the other, so you need to find out what six cylender you have before we can give you advice. go pop the hood, check your emissions stickers, read your engine cover, anything, something to find out what you are working with.

89IROC&RS
07-11-2005, 09:10 PM
YES!!! progress :) now we have something to work with. Im not fully up to spec on the 3.8L but here are some general hot rodding tips that apply to most engines.
Cylender heads - port and polish from a reputable machine shop, with before and after flowbench data. i would also install some milodon megaflow valves. im not sure about your application, but if comp cams makes behive springs for your application i would step up to them, they are lighter, have less sprung mass, and will better control your valves at high rpms. also, if you want to get high tech, you can look at coatings. i would put antifriction coatings on your vavlesprings, and valve stems, then put a thermal reflective coating on the entire combustion chamber, exhaust port, and valve faces. This should offer signifigant improovements over factory spec heads and even allow more compression.
Pistons - youd have to crunch some numbers to decide if you can run flat top pistons from an aftermarket source, or if you need to work with your factory units. either way, a thermal reflective coating on the piston crown, antifriction coatings on your piston skirts, and a set of gapless rings. also have your piston pin coated in anti friction coatings.
Connecting rods - not sure what your options are, but again, anti friction coatings on the bearings would help.
crankshaft - it could be gun drilled to lighten it, however im not too sure about how safe that is with a used cast crankshaft. again, antifriction coatings on bearings here would help out.
crank case - fab up a crank scraper that is about 1/8 inch away from the turning rotating assembly, this will remove oil from the rotating assembly to reduce windage and power robbing friction.
oil pan - check with milodon for a windage tray and other oil control items that will help make sure your oil is where it should be. and not ariating.
intake - extrude honing is a possibility here, as well as port matching with a rotory tool. a larger throttle body if its available, and a high flow mass airflow sensor as well.
camshaft - check comp cams to see if they make anything for the 3800 engine.
exhaust - a set of headers, check RK sport, and a high flow exhaust for the car, for a sixer i wouldnt go above a 2.5in system unless it has a big turbo on it.
that should give you some direction, some of the other guys on here know alot more about the 3800 series engines than i do.

dont get rksport exhaust!!!!
Best headers you can buy are Clear Image Automotive, since you're working with so much go for it. Highflow cat from Magnaflow (carsound) or Catco, but a lot of people with Catco have SES codes. I myself have a 3" Magnaflow cat and Magnaflow exhaust (LT1 model). If you get the non-LT1 exhaust (2.5") you will have to have a larger S pipe (goes after the cat and before the I-pipe) made, or buy one (I know SLP has them as an "install kit"). This is a subject that there is a lot to post on so I will do that when I am less tired.

Just a thought here, but you could always visit a forum such as camarov6 or fullthottlev6. Both of them focus more specifically on V6's and have a lot of people who have modded the 3.8l motor. Hell theres even quite a few who have modded the 3.4l Not that there is anything wrong with this site of course. :-)
