Have a Jeep cherokee that has an A/C leak. Dealership and another shop (tuffy) have done dye tests and can't find the leak. They both want tons of money to take out the dash and look for the problem. The freon only lasts about a week. Any ideas???

I have the same problem in my 94 Cherokee. I thought it might be the compressor, and they cost $474 remanufactured. So I'm going to take it to the shop that charged it up the last time- they told me if it leaks down, we'll have to start looking with the dye test. If I get it fixed, I'll let you know. Tim

Same problem, to the letter. One thing he told me is that it is a very small system, needing only 1.25 freon for a complete fill. I figure that's about $4 a week, if it last that long.

OK ....use the web...mine cost less that $300 including tax from autozone.com (R134a model--97 sport..Sanden).
Dye test is garbage ....you need an electronic tester...refrigerant leaks downward.....test the underside of the hose and things.
Test inside of the car near you feet.....that is the evaporator.
Test in front of the radiator...at the joints....
Test the compressor...in the middle of the clutch, where the shaft seal is at...then the back and where the hose attach...the o-rings get hard and leak.....
Test the receiver dryer....and the switches...
Test all the hoses...joints and the bottom side....
Low side is the fat side...it sucks....
High side is the skinny side....very high pressures (200+ psi)....leaks are common here.
Enough now...
Sounds like I'm still working in the garage....
