SHO vs Stealth NA

A guy I know wants to race his 1990 SHO vs my 94 R/T NA Stealth I laughed at first because the SHO is like a sedan, but he keeps saying they have about the same horsepower. So we are gona run em this weekend, what do you guys know about the 1990 SHO or SHOs in general, should i be worried? :smooch:
BTW we plan on racing from a 15 mph roll.

I hate idiots that think HP is all that matters, and if 2 different cars have the same HP, then they will be the same. There is also weight, driver, and gearing (just to name a few) that also determine the outcome.
Also, I hate people who think SHO's are fast. I don't care if it's a SHO, it sucks. You will win.

Another huge factor people forget is torque.

Only way you would ever lose to a SHO is if you had the SOHC 160 hp Stealth. SHO = SLOW I already had this race from a 60 roll on the highway once in my SL.
Also on Stealthee's note...horsepower is a derivative of torque, meaning they get the horsepower figure from the torque figure...so really what matters is torque to weight....I just learned that a week ago just thought i'd share.

Well......kind of
power is the measurement of how fast something of a certain weight can be moved a certain distance in a certain amount of time.
torque is just how hard the engine is pushing at a given instant.
but yes it is generally torque that matters more than hp, since on a dyno hp dervied from torque and rpm's. So if your engine doesnt rev as high as his, you could have less hp but more "push", making you faster.

Yeah well, the guy said his front left tire isnt good enough to race or somthing so he put it off till next weekend. I told him we should put some money on it so i dont waste my premium gas on a sedan, then he flipped me off :D

well, his is a 90 but its pretty beat up it has like 160k miles on it and from what i have heard is in pretty crummy shape and slow, compared to my 80k miles mint car :) btw does anyone know good shift times as far as RPMs go? or suggestions?

if you are gonna drag him, then shift at 5500-6k rpms. that's what I do, but I redline at 7k

6k is your peak power...I usually shift at 7k when drag racing.

I would shift at 7k, but I don't trust motors that well to take it up there. The highest I shift at is 6k. Arn't you supposed to shift at 7k 1st to 2nd then 6k 3rd to 4th or something like that due to our gearing? My car has no pull after 3rd. 4th and 5th are just highway gears to me.

get some GTO MR gears + 5spd rear differential and you'll have more pull in 4th! also with the gearing being shorter, you'll have better acceleration 1st-4th as compared to the stock U.S. trans.

First off they have NAs, and I'm not even sure if anyone has done that gearing swap to an NA or if it's even possible.
Second, they are hard to come by now, as I believe Kormex has sold out of them, so as of now, I think you need a friend in Japan to ship them to you...
As far as when to shift, I'd take it to redline.

ya, i know they have NA's, and thus the swap would probably not work b/c they have no rear diff. but you might be able to gain some pull in each gear, given they are shorter, without coupling it with a rear diff.
however, as you most aptly mentioned, yes Kormex is out of the MR gears and/or they will no longer sell them (or no longer buy them from Japan).
just wanted to throw out some food for thought

Didn't they make AWD SL models in Japan?

yea they did, all the GTOs in Japan were AWD, no matter what model

North America was the only place not to get a NA AWD. All UK 3000gts were AWD also if I remember right.
