What is the easiest way to get the actual error code once a check engine light comes on?
How can you reset the check engine light to see if the error reappears?
I was told by a shop that the error code indicated a cyclinder misfire and that the vehicle needed a $900 tune up. I was told they could not reset the check engine light because the car was in a constant state of misfire on cyc 1. The car runs and idles fine so this doesn't make sense to me.
Any input or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

After doing a search on the site. I followed some of the instructions people had given to reset the check engine light by disconnecting the battery. This worked.
I tried to get the error codes by using the ignition on off method and I got no results. Do only select models support this method? It is not clear how this method gets translated into the standard error codes that one would get off the scanner?
Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks.
