damn california emissions

My 98 accord needs a new catalytic converter and I really don't want to dish out $800 for the dealer. Thanks to the hippies that rule california, I can't buy an aftermarket cat for the car which is only a fraction of the cost for the OEM cat.

Does anyone have any idea about what i can do here? Is it possible to buy one from the junk yard? Is there an aftermarket cat I can buy that is CA legal? Thanks.

Why can't you buy an aftermarket cat. As long as it passes the smog test it should not be a problem. What do the muffler shop say? I'm confused.

all the aftermarket cat's i've seen state they are not legal in CA and some sellers won't even sell to you if you are in CA.

pull one off a junkyard car...probably wont cost you too much. Otherwise you will need to borrow one. Another possibly temp. fix would be to go to your local autozone or pepboys. They have this stuff that helps with emissions...the can has a red mitsu 3000gt on it...that will at least help.

do what i did to my friends 91 hatch B16SirII swap when he couldnt smog because of the swapped motor. make a friend at a smog shop and do it illegally for like 100 or 200 bucks. you'll pass smog tests with ease. ;-)
