Im having a shop bore/hone my block (.6mm over) and I asked about a tq plate for my car but they said they have a universal one... I already spend $1200 on pistons and about to spend 400 on bore/hone/block cleaning I dont want to risk all that money If im not sure, if the rings wont properly seal then Im pretty much screwed. Is anyone familiar with the universal torque plate? Do they work?

A good torque plate mimics the cylinder head, so all the head bolt holes must be present and the cylinder bore size and spacing must match the block perfectly.
I don't see how this can be done universally, given the wide variety of engine sizes out there.
I can see one torque plate would do an engine "family" such as being good for all small block Chevys, from 265 cubic inch to 400 cid. But such a torque plate simply would not fit any Ford or Chrysler engine.
Therefore, I suspect such a torque plate does not exist
IMHO they might be lying to you, especially since torque plates requre quite a lot of time to set up properly AND only provide slight improvements in cylinder sealing and power output.
I think that, unless you actually WATCH them use a torque plate, they wouldn't bother with one anyways.

Yeah I'm with magicrat on this one, I dont see how one could exist either. Also agree that they probably wouldnt use one unless you specificly requested it and watched them the entire time.
