I have a 396 i picked up about a year ago in a 72 Nova. It's cleaned up to a 402, with 454 heads. Not sure about the numbers. My question is The left bank rockersall have squares on the front of them, and the right bank do not have the squares. except the number 4 intake and number 8 intake appear to be swapped, because they are oppisite from the others on thier respective banks. I think the square designates intake, not left bank, but any help will be appriciated, because this is my first experiance with a big block.

I'm not sure what you mean about "squares", but stock BBC rockers are all the same, ratio and "fitment" wise. Some production runs may have different markings.

Thanks, then my question is in a differant area. I haven't broken out the micrometer, but they do look the same. She keeps throwing the 8th intake rocker, not sure why. Anyhelp?

Look for wear in the guideplate. Make sure the threads on the stud are in good shape and the stud is straight. Make sure the adjuster nut (if the stock type) has ample "crimp" to keep it from backing off.
Some BBCs have lifter bore issues, making for some strange failures. Keep us informed.

The guide plates are all (at least inappearance) equal. The studs show no wear, and the aftermarket nut seems fine. I don't think it is backing off, but it will throw it every 2 months(about 40 miles). My family and buddies have always been SBC guys, so this is a new one to me.
