What oil filter for B16A?

Hi short n' sweet question..... what oil filter should i ask for for my jdm b16a?

Should be the same as any american b16.

all b series filters are the same. maybe even the sohcs. just tell them its for a 00 civic si.

yep. i always get one for a 00 si. just dont get a fram filter, they suck lol.

99% of Honda/Acura use the SAME filter.

Fram # 3593A for the old style(larger)
Fram # 7317 for new style (smaller)

I use Honda filters, just gave the Fram # because it's the most common. There is nothing wrong with Fram filters.

One of their specific lines is just built cheap(cardboard ends, etc., lots of reviews on different forums). from the reviews it seems almost all filters are good except Fram Extra Guard and Double Guard, Pennzoil, STP, Supertech, and Bosch.

btw, i use Bosch on my D15B :p but on my parent's and sister's car(which need to last longer than mine), i use NAPA or Mobil.

fram works great assuming you change your oil every 3500 miles. people who say they suck, must not be doing their oil changes regularly.

Well IMO on oil filters (since my thread has changed subjects), i think its best for motors to run its smoothest using OEM products. i use honda oil and oil filters. did u know that honda dealerships do oil changes for $30 bucks?? call ur local honda dealer, that price isnt bad, they even threw in a free car wash!

$30 for an oil change is a rip off! At the Honda dealer I worked at an oil change is $34.95. I could see paying that if a HAND WASH/DRY was included but no way in hell I'd let my car get washed in that meatgrinder of a carwash.

Honda doesn't make their own oil, it's Valvoline.

thats the OEM JDM Honda oil filter. i dont know who its made by though. the USDM oil filters are made by Fram i believe(but i dont think they are the Double or Extra Guard type).

yeah 30 bucks is way too much for an oil change when I can do my own for 15-20 in less time than at a dealer anyway.

I'd take a $30 oil change for my wife's car over the $60 one the VW dealership charges... they claim that they ship their Castrol synthetic oil over from Germany. I still haven't changed the oil in that car... don't ask...

BTW, I use Purolator and if I had a B16 I'd probably use a Purolator filter on it too.

im rocking a mobile 1 on the b16 right now. not really my first choice of filters due to the price, but atleast I know I can trust it. The filter itself was like 13 bucks. Im acutally due for a oil change right now.

me too... driving at least 80 miles a day racks up the miles quick... 300 miles to 200,000 on the cluster... second engine to my knowledge rocking about 1/2 as many miles as the chassis...

BTW, if you take a Bosch filter and put it next to a Mobil 1 they are practically identical (except for the logo of course)...

See, I never remember what the serial number of the filter is. I just take the filter off, run up to the store and compare it...

What if the seals are different or the threads and you cant really tell, and then you put it on and drive 20 miles and the fucking thing falls off and you loose oil pressure and then blow your motor. that is really the dumbest thing ive heard today.

How is it dumb, when the fucking part number is on the oil filter itself? And not to mention most stores actually have a little book in the oil section that lists engines, and what filter (including what seriel number for the filter that fits that engine).

So please, I would like to know how having a part in your hand at a part store, to compare the old part that was on the car to a part that is going on the car, is a dumb idea? Please do explain, as its not a bad idea...

Wix ;) They make the some of the Napa filters also(Gold and another one), and many other OEM filters. the AC Delco's are similar to the Wix design.

when you have the part in your hand, you see nothing but the outside. the difference can be in the filter element, amount of filter, style and position of bypass valve, etc. "never judge a book by its cover" is what i think hybrid1990crx is trying to say.

btw, in the link i posted from the prelude site it talks about the Bosch isnt recommend, but the Mobil 1 is:

The Mobil 1 oil filter is well constructed and a decent filter. Unfortunately, I'm not been able to get my hands on a stock spec'ed Mobil 1 filter (but have taken apart a few oversized ones). However, I have been able to discern that it's made on the same line as the K&N filter, but will a media that is slightly better at filtration. Based on testing by others I still think this is a really good filter.

While both the STP and the Bosch filters were at one point good filters, they are now manufactured off shore of sub-standard parts. The filter assemblies tended not to have even pleats and generally less media than other comparable filters. There was also a complete lack of a well functioning by-pass valve. With most filters there is an obvious and discrete by-pass valve, but with these filters the can spring and the by-pass valve are the same. The real issue is that in order for the filter to properly by-pass the entire filter assembly would have to move down during use. That is actually not possible with filter assembly properly seating into the anti-drain back valve. This means that the by-pass will effectively never work. In the center of the of picture below you see the filter assembly (top) and the can spring/by-pass valve (bottom). (The can spring / by-pass valve would flip over and into the filter assembly.)
