DIY Rim Painting

Hey, I'm thinkin about changing my rims (Motegi MR7) from gunmetal to black and blue to match my car better. Does anybody know exactly what I'd have to do or specific materials I'd need to do this.

I have an extra rim to use at my house as a guinea pig in case it comes out lookin bad. My plan so far is to get some sandpaper (both coarse and fine) to sand down the areas I wanna paint, then mask off the parts I dont want to paint and proceed to add light coat after light coat.

It sounds good, but most bad ideas do before I do them. So would regular Home Depot sand paper work? For the paint, will normal body paint work out? I don't really see why it wouldn't.

Any advice is appreciated.

everything sounds good. just be sure to get some sealer/clear paint so it wont chip off or get damaged. what kind of colors are you painting it?

You could always have a shop powder coat them. I do not think that it is that expensive my frriend did with hi STi wheels and it came out good. I dunno if you wnated to do that but just an idea.

Well, I did my lil experiment. I started off by stripping the paint, easy enough after I bought the strong stuff. Then I did a base coat of silver and then masked off everything but the spokes so I could paint them black. My plan was black spokes then the rear section of the rim blue to match the body of my car. The black paint on its own was fine, but the clear coat did not work out like I expected. It didn't add a gloss, it just seemed to make the black look ashy. I allowed ample time for coats to dry before adding more clear coat, but same result. I used all duplicolor products, so I don't see why it didn't work.

So now I'm looking around to find a good shop to paint em. I really wanted to do it on my own, but the first rim was very time consuming only to not look how I wanted it. :disappoin
