Hey I am a 16 year old buying my first car and I have a few simple questions and would apreciate a little help. First off....I have $5,000 dollars so am looknig for a $3,000 dollar car and expecting to pay about $2,000 for insurance. Is that really how much it costs to insure teenagers? And if so which kind of car would be a good reliable first car....I know its not that much money. I was looking at some used neons and they seemed pretty decent. Next, I just want to know what performance modifications are mosty important for a car so they run well and work for a long time (exhausts, cold air intake, etc.) and finally, if I were to put a television in the dashboard back of the headrests and/or LED underbody kit, would the cars battery be enough to power that or should i go buy a different type of car battery for performance or something? If so, where should I look or which batteries do you guys recomend? Thank You please post back!

Before you buy a car, get some insurance quotes. These are free and any decent insurance agent or broker can give you some. They can also tell you some models and years of cars that would be cheapest to insure. This way, you can do some informed shopping.
Also insurance is generally very expensive for new drivers, esp. teens. $2000 may be reasonable. However, it can be cheaper for you if you are already insured to drive your parents car. You might be able to go with their insur co for a discount.
Look into teen driving courses for insurance discounts if applicable.
As for the mods.........IMHO performance mods and inexperienced 16 year old drivers generally don't mix, especially if you are concerned for insurance. High po cars and noisey exhausts just encourages kids to drive faster and louder and get more tickets, (I know by experience) and will just drive up insurance costs etc.
So save your money and lay off the mods until you get some driving experience and have a better idea about what you are doing.

I would definitely look into various classes if you're concerned about insurance. I took driver's ed at school, and a defensive driving class, and saved a total of 20%. Both classes were boring as all hell, but 20% is 20%. This thread should probably be moved, at least because of the insurance portion of it.

in terms of mods you can do a whole intake and exhaust upgrade (headers, high flow cat, cat back, CAI, heads) plus maybe some higher compression pistons and a better camshaft. you might think about forced induction (supercharger or turbocharger) but that might be too much for a 16 year old. i'd suggect higher compression and intake/exhaust because it increases gas mileage and power.
p.s. dont get a noisy fat-ass muffler it just sounds like shit and annoys the hell out of everyone

my experience....on insurance
Im 17 right now, and I have a defensive driving discount, good student discount, and multiple car discount (on the same plan as my parents cars) and im paying around $2100 for 12 months(around $180 a month). It also depends on where you live, I live in Miami, FL so its gonna be more expensive getting insurance here rather then a lower populated area.
When you think about money, dont expect to buy the car and pay for insurance and your done. You still have gas money to worry about.

Why are you thinking about putting televisions in the dash and headrests when it sounds like you are already very tight on money?
