I am new to thig whole car thing, i just got my license 4 moths ago, and recieved my dads old 1998 VW Passat 1.8T. This thing accelerates for crap. I have no power, none what so ever, I floor it and nothing happens. The car has 197000 miles on it and going strong but it takes forever to get through 1st gear, and climing hills...forget it. Yet my dads brand new 2004 VW Passat 1.8t flys. This thing spins tire, and accelerates very well. Same car, just newer. I dont understand it. Some one please help me. I have no idea whats wrong! :-(

Well youngin' watcha gonna hafta do is take out dat factor air filter fool it's robbin yo horsepower! Get a k&n intake for the oem intake box or get a CAI other wise known as a cold air intake. It will free up horsepower and also replace the factory restrictive filter.
Also get your maintance records and check things that are replaced recently.
Then start checking the turbo see if its bad. If thats the issue buy either the OEM one again or just upgrade it.

Sounds like a blocked intake(worn airfilter) or faulty air mass meter or lastly your turbos shot.

Well I worked on his car and installed a intake. His stock filter was packed with mud. So i put in a k&n cone filter on the mas so now he can hear the bov and turbo spooling. Next comes BOV,MBC, BOOST GAUGE!
Anyone know wat the stock psi is on his car? or whats the stock limits of the turbo? in psi of course.

98 only has 150hp... and At that mileage i bet the turbo is not boosting. 1.8t passat with no turbo = no fun... =( If you dont hear the turbo spooling its time to get anew turbo

ok for the noob who posted and can't read others post. I said I put a intake on his car and you can HEAR THE TURBO SPOOLING! AND THE BOV GOING OFF. Ok did you still miss it?
Either way the next mod's that I am doing to this passat is a boost gauge and boost controller and uping the boost to 14psi give or take depends on the datalogger. then I will put a BOV and not a bypass valve im sure just cause it "run's rich" you all mean between shifts and between shifts on a auto aint jackshit.
