I have a 2002 WJ Limited with the 4.7L V8. The Jeep is new to me and the O/D switch doesn't work to disengage O/D for towing or engine braking. I can downshift to 3, but I don't want to tow at highway speeds in either 3 or O/D. Any idea what the problem could be? Switch? Sensor? All other transmission shifting is smooth as silk, just the O/D button on the shifter does nothing.

I have an 02 WJ limited also.
First do you see the orange OD/OFF light come on in the dash just about in the center when you click the button on the shifter handle?
I'm going to tell you right now I can hardly feel it when I use mine, or for say not use it. All it does is keep the converter from "locking up" so if your trying to hear a "gear noise" or feel as if the jeep is in a lowe gear your going to be hard pressed.
If it's not working then it needs to be fixed when you can, see that Jeep is kinda cool, what it will do is downshift for you without your input in the trans gets to hot from towing or going up hill or even off roading, so even if you dont use you OD you Jeep will make up it's own mind if it wants or needs to downshift.
I also have a 98 5.9 this was the first year for the new PCM "computer" Mine does this also, that engine is a solid engine as well as the trans, unless your towing a M60 main battle, I would not be "worried" about it to much, however if you do not have a dash light comming when you turn off the OD you may have a bigger problem.
I hope this hleps, if you have more Info about what it's doin I will be gald to help if I can However I'm leaving the 10th and will not be back till next friday.
