I have a 96 gs, and just oneday to the next i heard a knocking sound coming from the engine. At first it wasnt all that loud so I shruged it off as a lifter tick. Now its just plain annoying. I rev my engine and the knockung gets faster and louder. im afraid its more then just a lifter tick now. The sound is a little louder now so i can kinda pin point it and i believe its coming from the right hand side of the engine right above the tranny. Dont know now if its in the head or in the block? ANy suggesions I would really appreciate it, thanks.

If it's a reallyl loud knocking, I'll say that it's a rod knock. Drop you pant, I mean pan, and start wiggling your rod, I mean your connecting rods. To and fro, should be very little movement, but some present for there to be a clearance for the oil.

Obviously when you drop your pan, you'll drain your oil first, look at it closely, look for a mess of metal flakes and such.

If not, I wear then tear apart the oil filter. If nothing abnormal in there, then as you said, it may be coming from the tranny, then something may be amiss with your clutch?

so before you go and do all that messing around....

drain oil, pull of the pan, pull off the rod bearing caps and take the bearings out. if they're scored or "scratched" at all (even a little scratch), i'd replace them before you fuck the whole motor. if they are scored and scratched, look at the rod surface and also the crankshaft surface to see if there is any scoring or scratching on there. if there is, you'll need to replace that part, if not, get a new set of rod bearings and it should take care of it.

Haha, Isn't what I said the same exact thing less the bearing checking?

i think i have the same problem. i hear i loud knocking sound coming from the right side of the tranny. question is, when you're idling and sink the clutch, does the sound go away? if so it might be throw-out bearing. that was what i was told

before you do any of that crap make sure your oil is full. we had somebody bring their car into the garage one time thuinking they needed a motor when it was actually just 3 1/2 qts low on oil. the engien it had only holds 4 btw
