I have the Equuis (sp?) 3100. I bought it from Cdn Tire. It was on sale last week for $149 ($249 last year). It reads all OBD11 codes from all vehicles and displays them nicely. It also stores them in memeory. It lets you know if all of the built in monitors have run their tests and allows one to clear the codes. It does not read ABS codes (few inexpensive ones do however). I have been very happy with mine.

I have an Actron 9145 that I got off eBay for around $180 new off of eBay. You can get it for around $215 on eBay. It will pull codes from any ODBII and ODBI (if you buy the adapter seperately) and tells you the code number as well as a brief description as to what the problem is. It also will give you real-time sensor readings. I bought it specifically for this reason over the scanners that only read the code/desc or just the code.

The one CDRU has is far better than my 3100. The 3100 will not read real time data. (OF course that is why it is $149 CDN and not $180 US. Still the extra cost is well worth it.
