e350 5.8L 1993 won't start and backfires

My van began to quit after running for a while. It would restart but some times it would backfire through the intake. After a doing this for a period of time it became harder to restart and had to sit for a while. Now it will only start for a brief time if at all and it backfires baddly. Could this be something electronic or is it mechanical?
