d16a9 problems

Hi gang,

was getting knocking noises in my d16a9 so i replaced the big end bearings with new ones. This is a distinct knock at about 3500 under load.....NOT TAPPETS.

anyway, that didn't fix it......any more ideas would greatly help guys.

there is absolutely no loss of power in this engine, it is very very fit....and no smoke, 93000 miles though.

i was maybe thinking of crank main bearings or piston gudgeon pins, perhaps water pump bearing, whaddya think?

thanks

Could it be just pinging?

If it's a heavy sounding knock it might be the connecting rod bearings. Keep us posted. GL

hi john,

thanks for your reply.....no its not pinging.....god, i wish it were.

it was the connecting rod big ends i replaced.......still knocking.

Took the crank mains out, nothing too scary there.

how can i tell if its the piston wrist pins.

D'oh! Sorry about that. Missed the part about you already replaced the big end of the connecting rod bearings.

To be frank I've never disassembled an engine to it's most basic parts. I've done head gaskets and the like though. Just never had the need to take an engine apart to that level.

Anyway, before taking the pistons out to have a look (I don't know of any other way of checking on the health of those parts.) I'd check to make sure there is sufficient oil pressure. I'd also pull the valve cover off and make sure your valve train is in good shape.

It also might be piston slap. The pistons and cylinder walls might be excessively worn allowing the piston to rock back and forth and the piston skirt slaps the sides of the bore. In some "big bore" motors this is common, my old Plymouth did this for 180,000 miles. GL
