Greetings, i have a 98 gp gt with about 98 thousand miles on it, and over the past couple of days, i have noticed a lot of resistence on the wheel while turning, and today when i went to drive my car, i could not turn the wheel left at all, the engine started to whine when i did so, but i was unable to turn the wheel. i went and purchsed some of the power steering fluid and topped it off, but i had no luck, anyone have this problem, or any reccomendations? because right now i am completley immobile =(

There are two possibilities here. First is that the rack and pinion have gone totally bad and you will need to replace it. The second is that the power steering pump has gone bad. The whine you heard may have been the pumps last gasp. I wouldn't drive it until you have a mechanic check it out. Unfortunately, my money is on the rack and pinion going bad since you can't turn it at all. If the pump went bad then you should still be able to turn it with some muscle.

yea, over the past couple days, i could turn it with a little bit of muscle, but now it is completly stuck, is this a common prblem with these cars? and how much would u guess it would cost to have this repaired?

You may be in luck. There is a recall on certain 1998 Grand Prix's for the rack and pinions. The recall is for problems that you have described. If the recall was never done you may be able to have the dealer repair it for free. The recall is #02V286000 Mfg. Campain #2049. If the dealer refuses then call 1-800-762-2737 (Pontiac) and explain that you never received a recall notice and they should easily authorize the repair. Good Luck!

My grand prix is having some problems. Today i brought it in because I have been hearing noise in the front when I go over bumps, I have been tiring to figure out what this nose has been for a long time. Anyways they said the Rack and Pinion was the problem. I am not real sure i believe this shop, but they did not fix it and told me to just keep driving it, becuse it may not get and worse... I am really confused at what to do. Any ideas??
