Year of motor

Back in March I bought a 1990 Laser that has the 1.8 motor, I took it to get the oil changed back in May and they said the oil filter would not fit. They actually said they one that fit is made for a 1996. Just wondering how do I identify the year my motor is. Were do I look? I am sure there is some type of motor ID. I did look around and found this number but its on to of the transmission. KR5M221VPKSJC5517
