...is a freaking boat!
Ok I was at this 4th of July party on this guy's private lake (yeah he's pretty freaking rich) and he had his drag boat there. Well, he turned it on and let the thing idle and it was the loudest engine I've ever heard in my life. You could see the firing order of the pistons as this thing idled it was so hopped up.
Anyway, the guy opened the engine up and flames shot several feet from the exhaust pipes and it was so damn loud.
When he turned the thing off I went over and looked at it and talk to him about it. I saw it had some type of MSD duel ignition setup and a Littlefield blower. I couldn't see any other names on the heads or anything like that so that was it.
Well, I got to talking to the guy who owned it and the engine was a 500 ci Chevy racing engine with 6500 horsepower. It could go at least 280 mph and could do a 1/4 mile on the water around 4.8 seconds.
I must say I fell over backwards when I heard that stuff. Then I started to imagine what that thing would do in a car.

280mph... Kinda hard fetched don't ya think?
Even the multiple engined off-shore race boats can barely break over 120mph.
Fastest boats on the water are the Hydra-foil Turbojet boats.
Current record holder is Miss Budweiser @ 220mph
http://home.earthlink.net/~grinstead/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/21850014r1sm.jpg
The absolute speed record is held by a pure jet powered boat, the Hyrda's still have a prop that is powered by the Turbojet.
Current record is 317mph done by The Spirit of Australia

really redneck In 1985 the Long Beach City Council named a park in his memory, Gabelich Park. In 1975 at Turlock Lake in California, the drag boat piloted by Gary Gabelich disintegrated at 180 mph. Although he was best known for his land speed exploits, Gabelich won both the American Power Boat Association Blown Fuel and Gas National Drag Boat championship. He was also the first person to win them both in the same eyar. In 1969 Gabelich was the first man to surpass 200 mph in a quarter mile drag boat.
so i 1969 a man went 200 mph in a drag boat think they can alittle faster in 36 years.
a guy in australia just went 206.09 mph and the record in austraila is 217. he feels the boat can go 245 mph.

If it needs that much HP (6500) to go that fast...then I would be really fucking unconvinced and unimpressed about it. I mean...lets look at it this way...Those things are areodynamically bad ass. They dont have to worry about getting traction, breaking loose, or hooking. They have near instantanious power at the flick of a wrist...I mean shit...with their design, friction with the water is minimal, enough to keep the boat from flying off the lake. So no, it does not have that much power, and no, I doubt it is that fast....This thread is worthless without pics or a time slip.

Well, I don't claim to be an expert on boat speed records. I just did a quick google search and found the results I posted. It's quite possible the results I found were out dated. But that's besides the point, my point was that it probably wasn't probable that a pleasure boat would of been that fast. Most boats that the general public can buy usually don't go much faster than 110mph.
this boat has 725 hp but runs 9's it takes 700 hp in a street car to run 9's but takes 7000 hp to run 4's on a drag strip y cant a boat that runs 4's in the 1/4 mile have 6500 hp? not trying to be mean red just trying to prove a fact.
Now, why can't a boat have 6500hp? Well, it can. In a professional racing boat sure. Why wouldn't they have it?
But the fact remains that a motor that powerfull. Such as one used in NHRA Top Fuelers. Are so volitile that they're impracticle to use. The motors are rebuilt to an effect of either torn down and checked for tolerances or completely rebuilt after each run.
So, to have a motor of that potential in a privately owned boat. Is impractical. That's why I don't think a 'pleasure' boat would have such power. That's why I said it's probably more like 650hp rather than 6500hp.
A single 650hp boat usually will do about 70-85mph. Depending on the size and weight of the boat. Boats that go faster usually have multiple engines. Usually Twin Big Blocks of 500+hp each. Some have triple big blocks.
There are the rare acceptions for those who have the money to burn, boats like the Donzi 38ZR with the Mercruiser T1075's. The boat is rated for a maximum horsepower of 2150hp.
That's a very expensive boat. Probably close to $400,000+.

So...he woulda needed to tear down the engine and rebuild just after starting it up and throwing a few revs of for some onlookers?

No, but you're missing the point. He'd have to have it worked on each time he took it out for a joy ride. And those motors aren't designed to run for more than about 30 seconds at any one time.
They do the start up, burn out... stage... race... shut down. That all usually isn't more than about 30 seconds from start to finish.
So, as I was saying. It's impractical to have a motor that powerful in a pleasure boat/car.
That's why I said, it's probably a typo and only 650hp.
Why everybody is having such a hard time grasping the concept, I don't know. :uhoh:

red i completely understand what u are saying i just thought personaly mybe this guy is a pro racer or built one. i mean he is extremly rich according to musclestang so i figured it was a possablilty. everyonce in awhile u see some rich guy with a 1200hp street car or some drag racing car mybe he does it for fun and has money to burn. i was trying to show a possablity for the other side of the story but ur right i highly dought the boat can do 280 sense the fastest i could find was 254 vid up above. but mybe he had his race boat off to show off to the ppl that were there. from what muscle said it sounded to me like the guy could be running nitro and if he was he pry didnt have nitro in a 650 hp engine. i was just defending the possablilty.

also to me everything musclestang has put on the forums seems to be true and he has a alot of knowalge about engines (mustang forum) so i trust in his words i figured if he didnt think the motor couldnt have 6500 horses then he wouldnt post it. i dont think it was a typo bc he know a boat cant do the 1/4 mile 4 secs with that little of hp.

It's prolly a top fueler engine just dropped in a boat. doubtful it's ever actually been run, probably mostly just theoretical. Granted the guy does have a private lake, so i doubt he's concerned about the price.
It's very possible.
I wouldn't really doubt the 1/4 mile time too much, and no you shouldn't have to break 300 mph. in a car yes, as you have traction issues and whatnot, but probably not in a boat.

The boat looked like this one. Except the front was smushed in to where the driver didn't have much room to sit. Most of the boat was used to hold the engine. The design though was much like this though.
And, I'm sure it's 650hp guys... not 6500hp.;)
If you saw and heard it you'd believe every horsepower they say it has.
Also, I thought I'd put a few things clear. This was an all out race boat that he had professionally built and not a pleasure boat like some hopped up Baja. He even pays people to race it for him. Also, the guys who were starting it up and stuff were part of the "pit crew" whose job it is to do nothing but work on this boat and maintain it. Trust me, this guy has money to go up to some people and say, "build me a 6500 horsepower boat that does the 1/4 mile in the 4s and can go over 250 mph."
