Modifying a 88-89 Civic Sedan..Which Engine fit??

Hi there...I am new to car modification. I was wondering which engines are Ok for my JDM 88-89 Civic Sedan that has a D12B - 1.2L SOHC 1 carburetor engine in it. Can someone tell me which low end engines I can fix, coz I know I can't go up to B16A or anything as such.

Can I put an engine with VTEC capability like D15B3?

Pls. advise. I need to know all you know.

...dont know much about the carb'd engines out there, but you'll probably wanna stay w/ a carb'd engine for ease of install...I'd look for a carb'd zc..they're pretty badass :) that's a dohc non vtec. they came in the 88-91 si's (dont know about the carbureted versions)...it'll bolt right in and be a nice swap :)
