ABS Sensor

Help I have an ABS sensor wire to the left frt wheel that was damaged. The rim rubbed the plastic coating off. Can the wire be spliced or repaired or does the wire ( and backing plate _ GM only for about $185 CAD) need to replaced?
Hopefully it can be repaired. Any tips or advice?

just repair the wire.

Electrical tape will do it.

Is the wire broke or is it just missing a little insulation?

If it is just missing a little insultion, tape will work, but don't get cheap tape. Use 3m super33 or super88, it is about $3 a roll, but it is much better. You can buy it anywhere that sells electrical supplies. The cheap stuff will come off in a matter of weeks. Wrap the tape around smoothly and cover a least an inch past the bad spot in each direction. When finished, cut the tape from the roll, don't tear it.

If the wire is broke, I recommend cleaning it extremely well, soldering the connection, and then taping it as described above. Make sure it gets a good connection, if the resistence through the repair is too high, it may adversely effect the ABS system.

Heat shrink is indeed better than tape, but Super 33 and Super 88 will work fine. I have used them professionally for years and I am very familiar with their characteristics.

Do you have the TSB number? If you do, I will look it up and post it. It wasn't listed under Brakes or Electrical.

I was not told that the wire was broken when he first posted, he said the insulation was worn through a bit.

The TBS is about 7 years ago. It was put out because a lot of j-body car owners where changing rims and the new rims where cutting the ABS wires. Then they would twist the bare wires then tape the wire up. When winter came the road salt/ water would wick up the abs wires and corrode or short them out.

Thanks to everyone for the responds. The wire was broken. In fact both were broken. So I had the wire soldered and taped, but don't think he put shrink tubing on. Can this be put on over the tape or does the tubing need to be slipped on the wire before the wire is soldered and taped? It sounds like it needs to be done regardless. Also I needed to have the ABS code flashed because the ABS light stayed on. The Vetronix Diagnosic tool worked but the Snap-On unit couldn't do the job.
