Ethanol Fuel

Has anyone tried running Ethanol in their GDI motor? I am looking at trying this but am unsure if the ECU will adapt the air/fuel ratio enough to compenstae or if the motor will run to lean and damage the piston/valves.
With the rising fuel prices and high octane requirement for GDI fuel I think that it would be a good idea to use. I have a 97 model Pajero (Jap import) so it is comparible in technology to the U.S. 99 Montero. Any advise would be appreciated.
