Good morning. Could anyone out there help me with a problem I am having? I have a '96 Miata and I have disconnected my trunk release. When I was performing this activity I managed to somehow disturb the linkage between the key tumbler and the trunk-latch mechanism. Now I cannot get the trunk open.
Would anyone out there happen to know how to get into the trunk without the key or trunk release?
Help!

theres only 4 ways to get into any trunk.
1. via key
2. via a release ( normally a cable, but you have to have a solid latch to pull against, like a bicycles breaks )
3. via the cabin ( on smaller cars this requires removal of the seats, back base wall or shielding
4. breaking
if you cant do 1-3, maybe a shop can drill thru the key and pop the trunk, you will then need to reattach the release and replace the key lock.

Thats interesting because i have a 91 miata and it doesnt have the optional interior trunk release, but my key is also giving me problems getting into the trunk. And there is definately no way through behind the seats.
running out of options quickly.

a screwdriver will work just fine...of course you are breaking the lock but i suggest buying another one before you do this...the trunk won't look broken but it will open if u pull on it after u break the lock...

I believe that you can remove the license plate and drill a hole through the rear panel. A stamped circle marks the spot. Then use a screw driver to pop the trunk. Replace the plate and all is normal. Do a search on miata.net for verification on the job. I've never done it.

That approach will damage the body. I suggest drilling thru the keyhole and manually releasing the trunk, then replace the keylock with a factory one from a mazda dealership. or just have them pop the trunk for you.
