I'm trying to pull apart all the videos I have and put the footage into one file (might make it into a screensaver or something) and have one problem with one video.
BestMotoring_Mclarenf1.asf..
I need this to be converted successfully to .avi.. spent a few hours trying to make it work, to no avail.
Is there anyone here able to convert this successfully, or happen to have a .avi version of this video?

If anybody knows of a way to compress an AVI file (currently over a GB!! and its only 20 mins!) to a smaller file size and keep 99% of the quality. Id be very interested.

I'm taking out all the footage in the videos and putting them into sections.. so I can make multiple compilation videos or screensavers and perhaps put some music in to go along with them..
This one video file is the problem its the ONLY video I can't convert, every time I try (Videocharge, ASFTools and Virtualdub1.3c) it messes up.. this is becoming very frustrating.
All the other .asf movies are fine, it is just this one file.
rr_ww, I can help you with that..
VirtualDub is probably the best for encoding video footage and it is free as well. It can convert files to any format, except .ASF/.WMV.
If you want to use this, go to www.virtualdub.org and download the latest version (should be 1.5.10 or higher)
If the file you have is .ASF, you will not be able to open it in virtualdub and will need to convert it to a .avi format first. (you can do that with other programs, like this one: http://www.geocities.com/myasftools/)
If you want an alternate encoding program to use, you can try "Window Media Encoder 9" which will ONLY convert the file to .ASF/.WMV format.
If you choose this one, you can get it here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/9series/encoder/default.aspx
Keep in mind that if you are new to video encoding, both VirtualDub and WMEncoder9 can be pretty confusing. In my opinion, VirtualDub is easier to learn and use once you get used to it.
Now, to the matter of video codecs. Probably the best ones for encoding videos like this are DivX, Xvid or WM9 (windows media 9). I use Xvid as it is free and the latest DivX codecs for encoding are usually not free.
DivX is here: www.divx.com
The XviD codec can be gotten here: (you need to install one of these before using virtualdub, otherwise you won't have a DivX/XviD option for encoding when you use virtualdub) http://download.divxmovies.com/XviD-1.0.3-20122004.exe
Finally, when you are ready to encode your video, you will need to play with the settings (and there are quite a lot) to find optimum quality for minimum filesize.
A good guide for understanding how to encode using XviD in Virtualdub can be found here:
http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/xvid-vdub-final.htm
The settings used there are a good place to start from. Best results are achieved through some trial and error, usually..
Good luck, if you have any questions, PM me and I will be happy to help you.
p.s. What is the video's resolution? If it is something like 320x240, you can get the file down to around 70-80mb...
