Key programming

Got an '03 with only one key. The dealer wants to charge $105 to program a new key. Is this something I can do myself. I've programmed keyless remotes before and it was easy to do with instructions. No special tools required. Any help would be great. Thanks. Sorry, it's an '03 New Beetle Convertible 2.0.

you cant program 01+ w.o a dealer scan tool.

I have a 2000 VW diesel now missing its only key, a switchblade remote. Does a 2000 need the dealer scan for replacement keys?

$105 is a normal price really. It's sometimes around $85, but if it has the keyless entry built into the head then it's worth the price. The laser cut (cuts are on the inside part) keys are dealership only, fyi.
