The A/C works great on my 97 xj 160k and going strong. The A/C blows cold into the passenger compartment for about an hour, then you still hear the blower going strong but you barely feel it in the cabin. It seems to be blowing the cold air overboard. If I shut down the jeep for about 20 minutes and everything works great again. Has anyone experienced this??

Quite possibly this is a case of evaporator freeze up. It happens when there is high humididty and frost collects on the evaporator fins and frezzes there. When you shut the A/C off for awhile the frost thaws off and drains out on the ground if the drain isn't plugged. When you turn the A/C on again, it cools good again for a short time.
try going on to the recirc position. That way you are recooling the dehumidified air from the cabin and not having to process new, humid air all the time.
Also, run the fan on medium to high speed. That will keep the evaporator tempurature from getting too low and reduce the chance of forming ice on the fins. (the coldest air is produced on the fans lowest speed). also move the temp lever up slightly from the coldest setting. You should still be at a comfortable temp if you are in the recirc position.
Keep cool!! :)

thanks for the input, my 89 does the same thing, i think my drain is plugged because i never see any water under the jeep. Can I just blow some air in the hose, where is it?

I was search the web for this issue and I found it to be a common problem....hope the following helps.

Trouble Spots
Consumer Guide'sŪ Auto Editors have scoured repair bulletins and questioned mechanics to search for commonly occurring problems for a particular vehicle. In some cases we also give possible manufacturer-suggested solutions. In many instances these trouble spots are Technical Service Bulletins posted by the manufacturer, however, we have our own expert looking at additional vehicle problems.
Air conditioner : The air conditioner gradually stops blowing cool air because the evaporator ices up. Replacing the low-pressure cycling switch usually fixes it. (1997-99)
