Well it finally happened to me... I was on the way to the airport in stop and go traffic and it drove fine for a while but then it just stopped shifting into 2nd and 4th. I know this is a common sunshell reactor gear problem. It's going to be interesting pushing the jimmy out of my parking spot at the airport. Wish me luck!

I'm sorry to hear that. Have you decided what you are going to do about it?

I hope it doesn't happen to mine, I've already got too much to do....my heater core started leaking and my catalytic convertor started rattling a couple days ago.

Do you think I'll ruin anything else by driving it back to my apartment?

Just for a little background, I put a corvette servo in about 5 weeks ago, and about a week after that I took off all of my hypertech settings to return it to stock. Since I deprogrammed I noticed it shifting more irregularly into second, sorta like the whole car would nosedive into the shift like it was slipping (maybe that's what slipping is). I didn't hear or feel anything crack while I was driving.

I have a ton of time to fix this thing while I'm in FL, but I'm afraid that this is one of those things I won't be able to do...

It will cause more damage to the tranny if you keep driving it. Here is a post by a tranny guy on another site. He says it can damage the case. As far as getting it fixed...I think you'll probably come out a lot better if you buy a rebuilt tranny and install it yourself, instead of having yours rebuilt, but check around and you might find a good deal.

"Here are some pics...

These are sun gears. The one on the left is a good one, the one on the right I removed from a transmission just yesterday, if you notice the ring on the top gear splines, this is actually the bottom of the sun shell which broke.

This is the broken sun shell which was removed from the same transmission. That collar on the sun gear from the previous pic belongs where that 2 inch hole is on the sun shell as you will see in the next pic.

Notice the collar on this (Good) sun shell.

There are no warning signs when one goes, they usually go with a bang in reverse.

To replace one, the transmission has to be removed and disassembled. With 119k on your trans, you need to just get the overhaul.
Do not drive it any more until you fix it. I have seen some tear up the case, then you will be looking at a new trans.

Upgrades I recommend is a heavy duty sun shell, there is an aftermarket one known as "The Beast". Corvette servo, new sprags, pump with a .500 boost valve. Also have the valve body completely upgraded with a new TCC regulator valve upgrade from Sonnax.

Good luck with it and let us know if you have any more questions

thanks for all the info... I've heard of "the beast". I think I'll look for a rebuilt tranny when I get back. I don't think s10 warehouse is too far away in Bradenton FL, maybe he'll hook me up.

What are the benefits of upgrading the torque converter?

I'm going to have my tranny beefed up while it's out, so I will take any suggestions...

Higher stall speed. When they're building your tranny, ask them for a Police Pack...

I took it to a local aamco and they want to rebuild it. They said they didn't know anything about any police pack, but they carry sonnax stuff and said they were going to install the beast. I'm going over today to talk to the mechanic wbout any upgrade's he'd recommend.

BTW My reactor sunshell was broke. Also a brown disk like clutch thingy with a band around it was apparently worn well beyond spec. Some pump needed replacement too. With the total rebuild the estimate was $2100.

You can probably save about a grand if you buy a rebuilt one and install it yourself.

You need to overhaul or replace your transmission. GM remanufactured transmission is your best bet and dont forget to replace torque converter.
