2001 EXP rear A/C Problems

The Rear A/C on a 2001 5.4 L Sport Edition Expedition XLT only blows air (not cold), nevertheless the front registers located at the dashboard continues to blow cold air.

I don't know how to troubleshoot this problem, I am aware that there is a condensor (evaporator) at the rear leaft quarter panel (I opened it, found the blower and the condensor), but I am not sure if this is the root cause of the problem.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I believe there is an actuator(motor) for the rear temperature controls. This will operate a door to either allow warm air or cool ari to be directed to the cabin of vehicle. Look for it to see if it is working.

Do you know the location of this actuator? I don't have problems with the air flow, but it blows air at room temperature, and I notice condensation water drops on the floor (the rear left quarter panel) were the condensator is located, so I beleive this tells me that the condensator is working properly.

If I turn the temperature control knob to het (red) it blows hot air, but when I turn it to cold air (blue), cold air does not come out from the vents, but normal temperature room air.

Can't post the pic. It is a small box. You will know it when you see it. If you disconnect it and work the linkage to the door by hand, you should be able to change the air temperature. Good luck.


Remove the LH quarter trim panel.
Remove the electronic actuator.
Disconnect the connector.
Remove the screws.
Remove the electronic actuator.

To install, reverse the removal procedure

i second way2olds repair.do at least 2 a week.

I beleive I don't have problem with the linkage,there is air flow coming thru from the rear end of the truck, the problem is that it is not cold air coming out, what is coming out is just regular room temperature air.

The actuator controls the air temperature. If you remove the actuator, you should be able to turn the part the actuator sits on and change the air temperature.

Have same issue. Just had mine diagnosed from ford dealer. Found actuator and blend door to be bad. They wanted to replace the whole rear heater box...$880.00. I will adjust by hand!

Iam mechanically inclined, but not much of a HVAC technician, if someone could take a picture and send it to me at [email protected], I'll be able to identify it and make the adjustments. Do I need to take apart anything?

You have to remove the left rear panel which is the same side the AC/Heat unit is on. Once uncovered and you are facing the unit, the actuator will be about 3/4's to the right. Mine was white. This is the one you need to make sure is adjusted correctly so you will get the proper temp air flow. There is also another one that sits on top which controls the air flow between the floor or panel. Remove the actuator and insert a large screwdriver in the slot to open/close the door inside the unit. Make sure the unit is running so you will tell the change in air temp.

Does this problem with the actuator also happen in 2002 Expeditions? Mine is doing the same thing and if I can correct the problem without taking it in to be diagnosed and fixed that would be great. Thanx for your help.

Took off the rear left quarter panel and the actuator is working correctly, when turned to the right (hot or red temp setting), it BLOWS HOT AIR, but when turned left (cold or blue temp setting), it does not blows cold air, but room temperature air.

Checked the amount of psi on the low preassure charge line, 40 psi. I plan to take the car to the shop this upcoming week, I have not been able to determine the cause of this problem, once is repaired I promise I will tell this group what was done and how to repair it.

Sorry, I have not been able to take the truck to get it fixed, the shops around here are telling me they are booked solid, the dealers are too expensive and we only have 2 cars, we both work and need the cars.
