the advantages of gears are they make ur car faster but they dont add any horsepower and for ur 3.8 mustang 3.73 gears r what i would recrecommend and the cheapest iv found ford racing 3.73 gears is $140 and its about $150-200 to install them and if u get them installed then go to a reputable shop

IM a little bit confused ... if it makes ur car faster then doesnt it mean you gain horsepower ? do you mean you have a higher top speed ?

Dude, I'll explain it as easily as I can :D
Have you seen those 21 Speed Bikes? they have the 7 Gears at the Rear Wheel and the 3 Gears where your pedals are.
now when you switch to the smallest gear on the front and the largest gear at the back, what happens?
if you have a bike at home try it, you will notice that if pedal hard right off the bat you will jump like a dog who got kicked in the ass, but if you stay in that gear, then you will be pedaling like crazy and hardly moving at all. So you have to jump to the next gear, then you pedal and start moving faster, but iif you notice, it becomes much harder to pedal at the same speed and gets easier as you go faster. However eventually you have to shift again to keep gaining speed.
Now think of your car as a bike with 5 gears at the front and one gear at the back. The gear at the back never changes, but the one at the front can switch between 5 different ones. So what if you could sacrifice a little of your top speed to be able to take off faster? That's what doing a gear swap does, it's like you're switching for a bigger gear at the rear, so that the wheels spin faster with the same power.
Horsepower remains the same because the engine hasn't changed at all, all we've done is make it easier for the engine to turn the wheels, but the actual Engine Horsepower remains the same.
Ideally we'd all run the biggest gear we can, but because we only have 5 gears in the Tranny, we run into the problem that even on 5th the engine has to pedal a lot to get the wheels to move a little, which means running at higher RPM's for the same speeds, and wasting more gas.

Sometimes you will still gain some top speed, in the case of a stock 95-95 Cobra, the stock 308 gears cause the motor to run out of steam in the 140-ish zone (100% stock motor) but a set of 3.55's or 3.73's will bring the motor up into the powerband and allow the car to go well over 150...

Yeah you will not gain any horsepower, but to make it appealing to you, it will feel like adding 20 to 25 rwhp to your engine, at least with a GT, never really messed with a 3.8, but if you get the gears make sure whoever puts them in, puts in new seal and shim's if needed. Also your going to need to have to buy a speedo gear or a programmer. Had a 95 t-bird with a v-8 and many mods, 3.73's put my my speedo at 9 miles faster than i was actually going by the time i hit 70.
