Rocker Panels

Did a search found some nothing that would really help me out. Here goes.

I have surface rust on my rockers who doesnt but am looking at slip ons because i have no knowledge of how to cut out weld and so on. With the slip ons do you need to pop rivet or could you get away with the supplied 3m tape?I was gonna do some body work this weekend and wanted to know because i still plan on sanding down the panels then primering over top.

where did you get the overlay panel ?
looks to me like the tape would detierate and that you need to weld them on. i need a set and i plan on welding them over the old.

i found em at a couple different places.its i think 17-20 bucks for each side.Ill post up the links later,have to go recover em.I saw ones with the tape and ones without and i was gonna pop rivet them in because i was talking to a body shop and they told me to pop rivet then when they get it they will smooth that out with bondo and paint over top.He advised against the tape as well because when you goto paint and sanding it doesnt hold up;

they have either the slip on or the whole piece

Cut and clean all the rust off the old panels, use JB Weld to glue on the new ones. This stuff is like steel when it sets up. Works slow so you can postion the panels just right and no rivets or screws needed to attract more rust. Should be a real simple job.

If the rusting isn't too bad, and you can get it stopped by grinding out the bad spots and painting with primer; it is possible to patch the spots with "kitty hair" and reshape it once filled. Then you just re-paint the entire surface. This isn't the preferred way to fix it, but is fairly easy to do and requires no welding or tapes. It really depends on how extensive the damage is if I would go this route or not.
