How to time a 1997 Geo Metro

What is the correct procedure for setting the ignition timing on a 1 liter Metro, I just got the car and it runs rough at idle. I don't have a chiltons or a factory manual at my disposal, and I cannot find a mechanic locally that knows how to set it, Thanks Darryle

have engine at op temp
jump the 2 plugs on the conn at the right side of firewall (underhood sticker will show you)
crank engine
attach timing light
adjust distributor til you get 6 degrees BTDC

(this is from my GF's 1996 1.o 3 cyl)

Ok this is the problem I am having, when jump the 2 plugs on the conn, the computer does not shut down. What could be the possible problems?
