edit: oh yea... i tried to paint window rubbers but when i put on the tape and removed it, it took some of the green and silver off, so it was down to the primer. i recoated it with silver and green. but i was wondering what my problem was? was my tape too sticky, did i try to stick on the tape too early after i painted the body, or what? any help would be appreciated for future reference. thanks!

yup, i had an old progress thread all the way from last summer on the same model, but i just decided to make a new thread. i painted the car today and am almost finished with everything else. i primered it with Duplicolor grey, base color of some type of Plastikote silver/aluminum or whatever, and topped it off with some old Duplicolor Emerald Green i had lying around. here are the pics:

hey, thanks for the comments! i had this thing 90% done last summer, but never got around to painting it. so it'll just be the kit rims, but i might need to paint them another color cuz kit chrome always looks bad. so any suggestions to go with the green would be appreciated. like i said in my original post it's gray primer, silver undercoat(s), and some Duplicolor Emerald Green mist coats on top. i never really put a wet coat on it so the paint is kinda rough, but it's still pretty shiny.

oh yea i don't know what brand masking tape i used, i just used some that i had lying around the house. another question here: if i put it on a table and pull it off it becomes less sticky right? so if i unsticky it a bit, then put it on the car, it shouldn't take off the paint. but then should i spray it? or should i handbrush it? if i handbrush it i'm worried about the paint leaking under the tape.

I only use brushes in very tight, very tiny areas. such as bolt heads, brake/fuel lines that are molded in, and drybrushing. the rest I mask and airbrush. your problem with the paint coming off was more than likely the same thing I had on my hyabusa....I used a silver base and put a closs transparent red top coat with a clear on top of that. what happened was the silver flake dried and created a film so the top coats just dried to that and peeled right off if chipped or taped off. I solved this by putting a wet coat of primer, then immediately putting the silver base...let it dry...wash it VERY thoroughly....then put your top coat on. once dry you should be OK!!

oh, and BTW, that paint looks really nice on there!!!! a trick I learned for the kit chrome rims...hit them with a coat of semigloss or flat...this makes them look like cast aluminum.

alright, thanks... i've discovered that the wet erase markers(the ones for overhead projectors) work pretty good. long storry cut short the stupid tape took off some more paint so i'm like wtf, i'm not doing this again. or should i? there are some patches of paint missing again and i dunno if i should redo it. but i have given up on masking this car, so i will be using the wet erase markers... just gotta make sure they don't get wet.

Get the blue painters tape. It has low tack. Yes, you probalbly put the tape on too soon. Yes, the tape was probably too sticky. Bfore you tape up something, if you want low tack from the masking tape, pat it on your shirt(sticky side down). This takes off some of the tack. Make sure the tape hasn't past its stickyness life. If it is too old, it could be dry, or could by over sticky and gooey, and just stick too much.

Love the color man! Good luck.
