DVD with sunroof

Sorry if this topic has been covered, but I could not find any answers in the search. I have an 03 Trailblazer LT (NON-EXT) with a sunroof and I would really like to have a DVD player (flipdown) installed. I have heard that this can be done, but I was wondering what DVD units are optimal for this install (cheaper the better) and will the rear passengers have to crane their necks back to see it? Thanks.

Panasonic will be implementing in August the OEM roof mounted DVD for Trailblazers/Envoys with sunroof. Regular length and extended. So in the near future you may be able to buy the component parts from GM dealerships.
Items you'll need:
Wiring harness,
DVD player and screen console assembly
Roof bracket and fastners
Headphone/remote kit
Potentially need a new radio headunit with RSE functionality unless Delphi gives that away in the non-RSE vehicles
The courage/skill to cut you headliner or purchase a headliner with the hole provision.

What's RSE?
FWIW, I installed a Panasonic DVD (no sunroof), and connected the audio to the OEM radio via an FM modulator. Probably insufficient quality for a primary audio source, but it sounds fine for most movie soundtracks. (In our case, the kids mostly use the IR headphones so we can listen to the radio; we only use the modulator when there are more passengers than headphones).

Can't be a GM product feature unless there is a good acyronm for it :)
Good idea on the FM modulator technique. If you just tapped into the downstream audio output from the radio head to the vehilcle speakers you would first need to be amped up and wouldn't have any volume control. Hense your fix hmnnnnn

No, I paid a local custom shop to do the install. BIG mistake! :shakehead
Based on taking the thing out a few times, I don't think removing the headliner is strictly necessary -- if you know what's "under" it. The installer didn't use the racks that came with the unit, which hook in behind cross-braces in the metal roof (according to the installation manual). I'd like to believe that's due to the air conditioning ducts that run through that area, and not because the installer is as incompetent as the rest of that shop's staff, but who knows...
What he did was build up a particle-board panel that covers the hole on the other side of the headliner, and screwed the chassis into that. Hence, it is the headliner itself that is holding up the whole assembly. I would have expected it to be too flimsy, but the TB headliner is pretty thick/stiff stuff. It seems to support the weight fine, including the stress of opening and closing the screen.
Knowing how mine fits, if I were to install another, I'd cut a small hole in the center of where the unit should go, and use a flashlight and dental mirror to make sure there is room all the way around. Adjust the template as necessary, then cut out the big hole. Of course, that's a little scary without seeing one first. If you'll be in the Raleigh, NC area anytime soon, let me know; I'll pull my DVD and you can check it out. :wave:

That's cool info for me about the DVD player from Panasonic. I got a little one who is really disliking any car rides....so maybe this will help him keep quiet......or....maybe not :-)

Hmm. The Panasonic CY-VHD9500U I purchased is no longer listed at Crutchfield. They show these models, all of which have an integral FM modulator, so you wouldn't need to add that like I did (you'd also preserve the audio out port, if you want to use it for something). All these models come with two IR headphones. All are $800.

You can find the Sony on eBay $600, with the Delphi's (slightly larger screen) available for under $650. If you have (or plan to haul) more than 2 kids, try to find out if there are inexpensive, compatable IR headphones available. I had to shell out $85 for a third headphone for the Panasonic set.
If you take kids on trips, it's a VERY good investment.
