Had an 83 6000 STE for about 10 years and I loved that car. Great handling little car. I wish I still had it.

Got it with 62k miles and now have 215k. Almost no problems, and no major ones. Ive done a bunch of little modifications to it too.

I have a 1990 SE - the all wheel drive model with 96,000 miles on it. I've been wondering how long it will last. What do you all think I can expect out of it?

I have an 88 6000. Just turned 39,000 miles, it was a freebie from my mother in law when she bought her new car. I have been looking for information on adaptabilty of parts from other models, or a resource for aftermarket performance parts. When I say performance, I mean stiffer and lower springs, shocks and struts, larger rotors and perhaps a back disc brake conversion. Any ideas?

The quickest way to improve performance is to switch to poly bushings. I think they are available for just about every application now. Don't go to poly motor mounts though unless you want your teeth to rattle. The suspension bushings will help tighten the handling. Also, find the sway bar from and STE, as they are larger and help with cornering.

Thanks for your reply, what about the rear disc brakes form the STE. Could I get every part needed for theat conversion new?

If you keep it maintained and up on oil changes...stuff like that then you can expect a lot out of it.Same thing with all cars.

I dont know if you can get all the parts new. But the STE rear disc brakes are a direct swap as long as you already have the larger 115mm bolt pattern. The only things that I dont know if theyre available new is the parking brake cables and backing plates. Youll want the used calipers for exchange purposes since rebuilds are like $70-$90 each plus about that much core. The used ones usually work fine, and if the bleeder is snapped off, just install a bleeder repair kit. Oh yeah I dont know if the parking brake caliper brackets and levers and springs are available new either, so youll wanna totally strip the caliper for exchange.

I put them in my wagon. They make a noticeable increase in braking. I like them mainly because I dont have to worry about the typical GM rear drum lockup syndrome anymore. And besides they look cool. (Theyre not in the pic above.)

thanks alot again. I am kinda stuck with this car for a while, I got it as a freebie from my mother in law who was the original owner. I turned 29,000 miles driving it home. I have really grown to like it, and I am a car enthusiast by nature. So I figured I might as well have a little fun with it.

I am purchasing new tires for it and am going up to a 15 inch, right now I am in the process of scouring junk yards for a set of straight aluminum 15 inch wheels that will fit. I dont care about the finish because I am going to bead blast and paint them anyway. Do you think I will have any problems with clearance going with a 15 inch maybe 60 or 65 series tire? Plus, what wheels fit these? I know they are a 115 mm 5 bolt but was wondering what other gm cars shared that bolt pattern so I know what I have to choose from.

Thanks again,

Dave

My wagon came from the factory with the 15" wheels in the picture. Many 88-91 6000 SE and STE models came with these wheels in silver, gold, and other colors. They are the same as those used on the 90-91 Trans Sport vans.

The 115mm pattern was used on the most midsize and large GM FWD vehicles up to 91 or so. After that, some of the larger FWD vehicles got a larger pattern, but many vehicles still kept the 115mm pattern.

You can go to http://www.ackerwheel.com and http://www.aaarims.com and they have a huge selection of wheels, with nice pictures and tell you the bolt pattern and what vehicles the wheels came from. They are very expensive, but I just use the site for a good reference.

As far as tires, my car calls for 195/70/R15 tires. They dont make these anymore, so the next proper size is 205/65/R15 which I have. They wont rub on a vehicle with a straight frame.

If you went to 15" wheels on your car, you could go with a 195/65/R15 tire and it should fit just fine and not affect your speedometer reading.

Mine's an 88 6000 with 302000km and still going strong. Easy to maintain. The wife drives it. I maintain it well. Don't want any complains from her.

The A-body was produced until 1996, when airbag and side impact laws made it too expensive to upgrade. GM would rather move the sales of A-bodies to N-bodies or W-bodies than spread them across THREE body lines.

ok if the 6000's are A-Types whats a 91 tempest ????

P.S. Airbags by any form suck ( I opened mine up disconnected them and manually shot off the cartridge without deploying the bag... I would rather have my face smashed up by the wheel/windsheild then have my nose shot to the back of my head, they kill more lives then they save..

Hudson

The (front-wheel drive) A-bodies included the Pontiac 6000, Chevrolet Celebrity, Oldsmobile Ciera/Cutlass Cruiser, and Buick Century. The Pontiac Tempest (and Chevrolet Beretta/Corsica) were L-bodies...based on the N-body (Pontiac Grand Am, Oldsmobile Calais, Buick Somerset/Skylark) and J-body (Chevrolet Cavalier, Pontiac J2000/2000/2000 Sunbird/Sunbird, Buick Skyhawk, Oldsmobile Firenza, Cadillac Cimarron).

PS: Airbags in most forms are excellent protection in an accident. Disconnecting one (unless you're 4'10") is just asking for trouble. I don't see why meeting the windshield would be better than using the airbag. Your information is a bit skewed since airbags SAVE many more lives than they take.

Very interesting I never knew the body type of my car all I know is mine has had 7 owners and they all abused the crap out of it and with the original engine at 363700+km it still runs strong and so does the tranny.. I received it from somone with a bad case of the oil won;t stay IN the engine and found out that since the car is distributerless they had to plug up that port and used a cheap 0.19 o-ring thing is it costs more to take apart the engine is to replace it so I took the headders off and replaced it with a custom form washer that was cut to the size of the cap and it hasn;t leaked since

actually no I used to work in the police impoun buiz and I have been called out to accidents and yes I saw everything.. I saw many children killed and even passengers by airbags, a chile was in a firebird equipped with a airbag and she had a minor 5 mile per hour bump with a retaining wall and the passenger airbag killed her daughter when it deployed it snapped the childs neck in 2 and literally crushed the child seat I would rather walk then to ride in a car equipped with them... Plus I am 6'4" so I can't fit into many cars ... my fathers sustained sever chest impact and facial impact when he first was in an accident with an airbag... so after that I won;t allow airbags in ANY of my families cars I have destoryed the airbags on my fathers van and my car
Personally I have strict issues with cars I want them MY way not any way which people tell me to have them... I have torn out my abs conteroller and all abs related equipment from my car... I am about to do it to my dads van because they kicked in on us duing a normal drive with normal braking almost causing us to run into the opposite lane
who ever invented these things should be shot..
I love my GM car but some of the safty features suck

Hudson

You definitely have issues. The poor child who was killed died due to her mother's inability to pay attention....children should not be placed in front of airbags. A Firebird has a back seat and THAT is where children should be.

Airbags DEFINITELY save more lives than they take. There is no doubt about it.

Well I can;t and won;t say for others but everyone has there personal opionions.. and I spoke mine..

relitivley the fact that cars and trucks have airbags and abs doesn't reflect that they can still kill, no car is the ULTIMATE for safty.. I just choose the way mine performs and acts people say seatbelt save lives well heres the most ironic thing a month or so ago there was a severe accident where a taxi ( won;t say the make) was hit by a tractor trailor 1 child was instantly killed and anothr walked away with a few bruses.. thing is the child that was on the side that was directly impacted walked away the child on the uneffected side was killed ??? also both were in the back seat..
dodge on the other hand is in there own class for pathetically built vehicles with there so called 5 star safty they were iinstantly stripped of that when a dodge caravan was hit headon by a chevy astrovan, there was 3 children and 2 adults in the caravan the 2 children were ejected out the back door ( which they found the back latch was defective aswell was the seat latch that was manufactured by the same company.. all and all nothing in the world is absolute... if I want my car to be and perform a certain way nothing is going to stop me from doing it

Catch up to the times. ABS and airbags IMPROVE a vehicle's safety. When used properly, people's lives can be saved using them. When used improperly, ANYTHING can harm or kill. It's not the car companies' fault that drivers are, by and large, idiots. Follow the procedure (place children in the back seat, adjust the steering wheel and seats properly, etc) and you will have a better chance of walking away from an accident if your car has a (properly working) airbag. I think any relatively minor harm done to an adult in the deployment of airbags in most accidents (there are exceptions..and very few at that) is a small price to pay for being able to WALK AWAY from the accident.

When Chrysler minivans had their door latch problem, there were no "5-star" ratings. Chrysler recalled the door latches in 1996 or 1997 for minivans built before the 1996 redesign.

As you said earlier, you have issues.

I don't know where you get your info this accident was with a 1998 white dodge caravan...
the taxi was a 2001 Chevy

well yeah ok i have issue's but there my problem if I dont; want any of that crap ( airbags and abs) its my choice... I never sell a car I personally own I have it crushed / donated to the fire department for training and/or to be burned so i dont; have to worry about others dealing with what i did to it... I had my prelude MASHED because I didn;t want to sell problems to others ( disabled the ABS )

as I said People have there own opinions I have mine Please don;t tell me I have issues... not even the Mechanics at the 2 GM dealers I took my car were that rude and they mentioned to me that my ABS/airbag lights and modules have been bypassed.. I told them and they told me its my choice being its not a Provicual or federal law to remove the ABS and airbags I can do what I please to my vehicle

I just purchased a 91 6000le for like 300 bucks from my neighbor. Im not sure if she has taken care of it all to well, but I plan on upgrading interior and exterior. Any hints on where I could possibly find body kits or custom interior trims, as well as rims to fit?

I own a 1984 Pontiac 6000. Love the car to death. It was a gift from my former trumpet teacher who gave it to me when he got a new car. I've only had it for 2 years and have already put at least 25k miles on it.
Only things I've really done to it are: replace battery and starter, replace the head gasket, and replace the brake rotors.

Anyone know where I can get the emblems that go on the outside of the car? Mine are not there. The only thing I can figure is that whoever owned it before my teacher lost them when the car was repainted.
