Well here is the situation. Hope you guys can help me out since no one checks the paseo forum. When I am driving along without my foot into the gas the car drives fine. Only when I am in second through third gears, the car seems to bog horribly. Also only if I have the engine between the 1000-2700 RPM range. I Know it is not the clutch because when I step into the gas the tach does not jump at all it sits there then SLOWLY revs. I was told by a mechanic this is because of engine knock. Then I was told this is because the clutch is going out. A little help here please.

The problem is between the engine and the clutch. It could be either one or the other, or something in-between.
I have a similar intermittent problem when I switch to gear 5, it seems to slip into gear 4 or something (not physically), but the engine roars and I do not get much acselarion beyong 60 mph. I was told it was the clutch, but am not so sure, considering the complexity of what you can't see. I would suggest taking the car to a mechanic and getting a no fix no pay option.
Then again I am just a newb with a passion for the MR2 that I recently got.

it sounds like your clutches are slipping .... which means its time for a new one .... also get a new oem throw out bearing like 26 dollars .... im sure its the clutch see instead .... instead of the clutch speeding the driveshaft up to mach the engine rpm the clutch slipps and causes the engine to basically free rev untill there is enough clamping force to mash the clutch into the flywheel and finally spins the driveshaft up to the right rpm

bugging down, engine revs not going up.... how do you two figure its a clutch slipping again? 1000-2700... thats pretty low in the rev range for a little engine to be slipping a clutch... you must have MONSTER torque...

i'd be checking your ignition components... if they aren't firing properly youll be way down on power and you'll notice it most in low-mid. then check stuff like timing etc... stuff that makes the engine not go so well. could also check your air filter and stuff while you're at it...

cheers.

the second guys seems more like a clutch but i just skimmed over the friest it didnt realize that the rpms weren't going up i thought it said that they were ... it wouldnt matter the torque if the clutch was shot my friend can barely get his car too move this week cause his clutch is prety much gone

lol yeah thought you may have just read the second one... torque will make it break friction on the clutch plate... when the clutch is completely gone it won't go anywhere, but at first it will only slip when it's not capable of holding the torque. that's why it's be odd to start slipping at such low revs, less torque. and it'll smell.
