Wanting to Personalize Programming

 I have a 2001 Venture with a BCM of 4, I'm wanting to
change some of the Vechile Personalization, I want the headlamps
to come on when I exit. I have a factory manual and I followed the
steps over and over, it's somewhat confusing because it doesn't spell out
how to change the various modes to achieve what you want to do, it
lists all of them however, like Mode 1 is this, Mode 2 is something else.
The manual also says I should be able to program using the DIC but
every attempt I make to do so it never enters the programming mode.
Hoping their is a GM programming genuis that could tell me what I am
doing wrong, for the record and as stated above I DO have a BCM 4,
keyless entry,AUO-UA6 & E58 and I do have DIC. Any help would be
grateful.

Bob,
Did you get it into programming mode by removing the BCM fuse?
I believe they mention this on page 2-17 of the manual. If so, did you hear the "chimes" a certain number of times and were you able to change them?
They also mention that the "content theft deterrent system" must be turned off (or disarmed). I only have BCM # 3 so I have never had to worry about that. But I see it on pages 2-23 through 2-26.
Hope this helps,

My manual doesn't make that statement at all, in fact all programming
instructions start on pages 8-499 and go to 8-511. I remove the
BCM PROGRAM fuse and go thru a 'test mode' which verifies that all
modes are avialble and supposely working without any DTC's, then
I go to a page called Vechile and/or Personalization, on this page you
are suppose to be able to select how you want the Vechile to function,
like, do the interior lights come on when the door is unlocked?, do the
doors wait 5 secs to lock once you exit the Vechile, and so on, what the
page DOESN'T explain is how to select each one of these modes, it just
explains what they do and which ones are default, further on the page
it explains how to program if you don't have Keyless Entry, and how to
if you DO or DON'T have DIC, I have attempted the program via the
DIC following the instructions exactly but I never get into the program,
I'm suppose to be able to put the ignition in the run mode, then push
lock on the remote, then using the mode switch on the DIC select
which driver I am by a number like 1, but I push the mode button and
it does nothing but scroll me thru the temp, mileage driven, fuel available
etc. The Manual is a 3 volume set two of them about 2" thick
with ID GMP/01-U-2
THANKS

I think we are talking about different manuals here.
Mine is the "2001 Chevrolet Venture Owner's Manual". That's where the page references came from.
It sounds to me like you have the "service" manual(s), especially since it talks about testing & diagnostics. I didn't know things could be programmed through the DIC!
The Owner's Manual DOES tell how to change modes for various features. But it doesn't say anything about having the "headlamps" come on when you exit. The closest thing it says is that it has a "Remote Lock and Unlock Confirmation", which flashes the parking lights when the remote is used to lock/unlock the van.
The Owner's Manual is the only one I have ever used for personalization. If you don't have one, you can register at mygmlink.com and get a PDF version of the manual.
If you need more help, just let me know.
Take Care,

I NEVER thought of looking at the OWNER'S MANUAL, I had the GM
SERVICE Manual....but I did refer to the Owner's Manual and WAS able
to change my programming except the parking lights still do not flash
when arming or disarming the alarm, but I did verify that it is in that
mode of programming. I also don't see the red flashing indicator
working, but it could be the bulb is burn out cause the system is
working.

I believe that bulb is probably a LED, and probably not burned out. Maybe the alarm system is broke. I would test it.
Do you have one of those "Panic" buttons on your remote? If so, give it a push and see if the lights flash and the horn honks. As I said, I don't have the "theft deterent" package, but the On-Star folks can make the lights flash & horn honk (to be able to find the van).
Now - that makes me wonder - what REALLY is the difference between BCM 3 & 4? Something to think about. If On-Star can do it . . . :naughty:

According to the SERVICE manaul you need BCM 4 for KEY CYLINDER
LOCK and CONTENT THEFT DETERRENT, you need at least BCM 3
for Keyless Entry other than these three things BCM 2 will provide
everything else. I had a 3 and upgraded to a 4, purchased if from
RockAuto.com for under $50.00 it was orginial AC/Delco, just plugs in.
Here is how to program it:
Put key in ignition in the lock position
REMOVE the BCM PRGRM fuse # 47
Turn the ignition switch to the ACC position
Turn the ignition switch FROM the ACC to LOCK and then back to
ACC within 1 second, the seat belt indicator will flash and you will hear
a number of chimes, this will tell you what the BCM is 2,3,or 4.
If there is a DTC stored it will continue to read these (chimes will keep
sounding) until all are read and then REPEAT 3 times. If there NO
DTC's the number of chimes you hear is the number of the BCM.
Open and close any door, the BCM will chime when you do this to
confirm you have entered the programming stage.
Cycle the INTERIOR LIGHT SWITCH FROM to ON then OFF for EACH
FUNCTION (leave in the on position for a second, then turn back off
and go to next step)
Mode 1...Turns off the courtesty lights and removes power to the
interior lamps.
Mode 2...Turns on the coutesty lights and some interior lamps
Mode 3...Turns on the courtesy lights and turns on ALL of the interior
lamps
Mode 4..Activates the theft deterrent relay 1 sec and turns on the
headlamps (BCM4)
Mode 5..Energizes the horn relay for 25ms (BCM4)
Mode 6..Turns ON securtiy LED (BCM4)
Mode7..Turns OFF securit LED (BCM4)
Exit programming....turn ignition switch to the LOCK position
Reinstall fuse 47 BCM PROGRAM FUSE
Turn ignition to switch to RUN.
TO DETERMINE WHAT THE BCM IS YOU HAVE NOW
Turn the igntion switch to the LOCK position
Remove Fuse 47 BCM PROGRAM fuse
Turn the ignition switch to ACC, listen and count the number of chimes,
this number is the number of your BCM
To EXit.. turn ignition switch to the LOCK position
Reinstall fuse 47 BCM PROGRAM FUSE
Turn ignition switch to RUN
I can also assure you IF you have automatic door locks, & keyless entry,
your van is has all the WIRING it needs to upgrade to BCM 4...just plug
it in and program.
By the way, I purchased the remote I needed (one with the Panic button
on it from Ebay)

Isn't there an EXTRA motion sensor for the Content Theft-Deterrent System?
But I guess you could run it without that - just no motion sensing.

YES, according to the SERVICE MANUAL you need the CTD to get
the horns and lights to work, the horns will sound and the lights
will flash to scare off anyone attempting to break in, VTD only prevents
the vechile from being driven off without the proper key.

Newbie here....NOT A REPLY BUT FURTHER TO YOUR QUESTION
...been searching this sight on/off for a few days for I think I have a similar question....have '01 Montana with BCM 2, would like to get to BCM 3 for remote keyless door lock/unlock convenience, but maybe just going to BCM 4 might be smarter. Assume all wiring and connectors are installed for all models, only need to upgrade or install new module??? Will try rockauto.com but gmpartsdirect.com required part# which I have no idea. Did find RKE receiver and transmitter but believe the BCM 2 still needs different programming or new module for BCM 3 capabilties???
Any advice or directions would be appreciated.
Have you had any success???
Thanks in advance

Comment #5 mentioned he is able to change programming for remote locking/unlocking, but lights do not flash. I have same problem. For the option I chose, the lights should flash when locking/unlocking, but mine will only honk the horn on second lock. 2003 venture LS with BCM 4. Any clues? thanks!!!
