Voyager transmission

My daughter is using my van to go from home to work (approx 2 miles). It is a 1986 4 cycle. She claims that there was no noise associated with the trans but that from a dead stop she could only get into reverse. The fluid looks fine. The car coast as if in nuetral in all forward gears. I do not sense engagement when I shift. There is a definite clunk when reverse is engaged. recomendations would be fantastic. I would shelve the van and call it a day (180K miles) but at 4 miles a day driving, seems silly to buy something else. I've never had a problem and put less than $500 a year in repairs since the warrenty ran out.

Sounds like the transmission has finally given up the fight. You will probably need to replace it with another one. You got your moneys' worth out of it and since it is an 86 it shouldn't cost a whole lot for another tranny at a wrecking yard. Putting it in may cost you the most but if you are mechanically inclined you may want to do it yourself. Regardless, it is cheaper than a new car payment.

Unless your van is near mint I would call it good. 19 years is darn good service. Anything you do to it would cost $500 and up. That money could go down on a good economy car. The engine must be getting tired too.

The Tranny in my wife's Plymouth failed and it cost over $ 2,700.00 (:crying:) to have the unit installed. We bought the unit directly from the local MoPar dealer since the warranty would be a 12/12.
If I had to do it all again I would of spent the money on an other Van, and it more than likely won't be a MoPar again.:banghead:
You might be lucky and can find one from a Salvage Yard, but may the buyer beware, since you'll only get a 3/3 warranty, (3 feet or 3 seconds).:2cents:
Best of luck to you!

My 97 voyagers tranny was just rebuilt and cost me $1800 and got a 1 year or 12,000 mile warranty i would have gotten one at a local junkyard but couldnt find one mine is the 4 speed and i guess are hard to find and very expensive. Yours would probably be alot cheaper if you have the 3 speed. Good luck FrankC

I got out my warranty paperwork last night to confirm the mileage and time and it turns out to have a 3 year/36,000 mile coverage.
No one in our area would rebuild the unit and give a warranty over 90 days on a rebuild.
I didn't want to go to the national Transmission stores and wind up paying way over $ 3,000 for their transmissions since that was more than the veh is worth. We trust our local shop to do the work I can't and they are outstanding people.
But don't you just get the feeling of dread when you bring in the veh and hear the dreaded, we've seen alot of these in the Chrysler Transmission.
The first transmission went Chernobyl thanks to the poor design of the torque converter. I found a link that mentioned a possible class action lawsuit against Chrysler for the Transmission issues, but it was from '01, and no updates have been posted since.
:loser: (This is for Chrysler for making such a rotten transmission).
Our van only had 101,000 miles when it popped without any warning while my wife was driving on the highway, during rush hour. How safe is that? I'd be happy with Chrysler stepping up to the plate and giving a customer split for any replacements, but I guess someone has to get hurt or worst before they'd lift a finger.
Besides it's only a family van and what could anyone be hauling around in it when another unit fails on a lone highway or a busy freeway during rush hour and a Tractor Trailer rearends it sending children out of their defective locking rear hacthes on the roadway? Mind you, this thankfully hasn't happened, yet.....:frown:

in an 86 van i would think u could find a 3 spd tranny 4 around $200. in fact these are so common that if it is a 4 cylinder i happen 2 have one sitting in my shed right now out of my 89 daytona which i put an a520 5spd in!

Would be nice if chrysler would step up and help some of the folks that has had problems with trannys i wrote chrysler a letter about the problem we had with our tranny and they said our van is a 97 and there was nothing they could do for us at the moment so i asked them how about some of the folks with the 2002, 2003 and 2004 that have had problems with theres can you help them they wrote back to me sayin that there was nothin they could do for them and for me to stop starting trouble. They really suck how am i starting trouble i just asked them a simple question damn losers you dont see chevy or ford with these kinds of problems. i will never buy another chrysler, dodge or plymouth vehicle and i know lots of people who feel the same way.

I have a 99 Voyager that is starting to have a delay in shifting or a slippage. Other than that its been the best vehicle i have owned. GM and Ford have their problems too. The Ford Windstar was terrible for repairs. The almighty Honda Odyssey has transmission problems too. I like the Chrysler mini vans best.
I do think the transmissions need to be stronger in the vans than they are in a passenger car. Most companys use the same for both. People who own a van would most likely tow a camper or boat with it. Plus the size of the van is larger than a full size car. My wifes van has never had a hitch on it. I`m kind of afraid to tow with it for fear of transmission failer. I drive a chevy truck just so I can tow my boat. I do wish the mini vans had better transmissions. Chrysler is every bit as good as any other make and even better in vans.

If Chrysler wanted to do the right thing they could start by issuing a Special Policy towards the Coverage of the weak transmissions.
Hey, GM has a special policy 00064 which covers the diesel pump for 11 years or 120K, whichever comes first. The diesel fuel pump isn't cheap. They stepped up tothe plate.
Special Policy 04039 covers the injectors in the '01-'02 Diesel C/K series pick ups for 7 years or 200K, whichever comes first.
I use to sell Chryslers and really liked them, however, I would not own a GM V/U/X (Venture Van and others) if they paid me. They had a ton of recalls involving defective sliding door relays. GM's reaction gear design leaves a lot to be desired.
The L/M van (Astro/Safari) had serpentine belt tensioner issues and the lack of room and funky sound rolling down the street isn't for me.
I really liked the Ford Aerostar. We owned an '86, '96, and a '97. The ride wasn't the greatest, but they were durable and easy to maintain. Ford stopped selling them and I did not care for the Windstar/Nissan Quest. Something just strikes me about them.
Chrysler was the first with the mini-van design and they are fairly dependable and easy to perform routine maintence. I'm just turned off with the transmission issue right now.
Chrysler can step up to the plate and make things right by offering a special policy to assist current and past owners to help mend fences with us. If a cust never uses the special policy, it doesn't cost them a cent and shows the goodwill towards the consumer.
Chrysler can offer an upgrade to the transmission by using a new and improved clutch plate design that doesn't delaminate when exposed to other fluids and would resolve a portion of the issues people had. They can offer a partical or whole reim limited to what a replacement cost when performed at a MoPar dealer.
If any Chrysler Reps are reading this, keep your Owners Loyality Certificate or money towards a future purchase, just make it right.:evillol:
