Is the smoke blue or black or white?
Blue=buring oil
black=unburnt fuel
white=burning water

If the smoke has a blue tint and only happens under acceleration, then it's your piston rings.
If it blows blue smoke when you start it, then it's
your valve guides.
If it blows white smoke (steam) then it's your head gasket. If the head gasket is really bad, your oil will look like chocolate milk.
Black smoke means you're running way too rich. This can be solved by adjusting the carburetor and giving the motor a complete tune up.

Do a compression test to rule out the rings. I'm not 100% convinced that it's unburnt fuel, simply because you notice it more when you accelerate. Fuel level has nothing to do with it.
I once had a car with bad rings that had horrible black smoke coming out of the exhaust. The oil was always black (even an hour after changing it), it went through a quart of oil a day, and it had horrible compression, but it passed emissions fine.
I sold it while I still could.

do basic stuff like exhaust and header and intake,just little tings unless you want to put some time into it than u can do a swap,again,im not sure if u can put big motors in it,like if a H22 or B18 will fit in it easily,(you will probobly need new mounts and need to know how to wire in vtec)...but the basics will make it a bit funner,the swap will make it ALOT FUNNER...:)....have fun...lol

u can do a d16a swap pretty cheap they just bolt in with the eception of modify the tranny mount but i did it twice so far and it is not that hard. but get the whole car cuz u can also do the rear disc conversion pretty easy to.
