I'm thinking about buying one. Any help out there? My truck is a 02 s10 with the 4.3l v6 with the 5 speed. I all ready have AEM brut force intake, 75mm throttle body, msd ignition, power pulleys, magnaflow high flow cat, and a gibson exhaust.

Personally, I think aftermarket "chips" and programmers are a waste of money. These chips and programers must meet *all* the EPA emissions requirements of the factory chip. What this means is the "performance" chip/programmer does absolutely zip under most operating conditions of the engine. So how do they claim "increased HP"? Because of a small loophole in the emisssions regulations regarding engine operation under wide open throttle (WOT). Under WOT, engine performance is maximized at the cost of increased emissions... WOT is considered sort of an emergency situation and since this condition rarely occurs under normal driving, the impact on the environment is about nil. The aftermarket "performance" chips focus their tuning in this area of engine operation buy tweaking the engine management computer; a more radical advance curve and mixture enrichments are common tweaks (you'll usually have to install a "performance" 160 deg t-stat and filler-up with premium to get the maximum HP increase). So, yes, these chips/programers can increase the *peak* HP of your engine.... but only if and when you enter the WOT mode of operation.... not likely in street driving.... even in "spirited" street driving. And peak HP is not what gives a street machine it's punch; it's a big, broad, flat torque curve that starts down low in the rpm range. These chips/programers also typically tweak the shift parameters of computer controlled auto trannies; holding each gear a bit longer, firming up the shift quality and delaying lockup and O/D operations giving a "seat of the pants" feel of improved performance (of the transmission but not the engine). With a manual box. obviously you'll not get this benefit. Think about it, if the auto makers could increase performance (HP), still meet emissions and have a high reliability rate by installing a better chip, don't you think they would?

IMHO, if you really want to up the motivation level of you ride, save your pennies and invest in a V-8 swap..... it's a popular mod and there are some good websites and books addressing the v-6 to v-8 swap. But, if ya just gotta have a chip or programer and ya got 400+ large justa burinin' a hole in your pocket.... have at it.

Also, be aware the engine computer has the ability to adjust the fuel mixture richer or leaner... within it's design parameters. With all the aftermarket intake and exhuast upgrades, it is possible to increase engine airflow (intake and exhaust) such that the computer cannot enrichen the fuel mixture enough to take full advantage of the better air flow.... you end up paying for performance and get less of it becuase you've exceeded the mixture tweak (enrich) limitations of the engine computer.

.... stepping off the soapbox,

mike

neither, your going good now, time to have a chip made for you, a few mag.s out there advertise the companies that will make you a chip for what you have, you need to contact them, after contacting someon like crane cam or comp cams and having a nice camshaft made for your moter, port polish, and advance your timing just a cunt hair foward and run premium, thats going to be your best bet over a chip/programmer to give you preformence out of your stock 4.3L at WOT

I used Hypertech on my '96 K1500 Silverado Z-71 4x4 after installing a K&N filter and flowmaster exhaust and it definately made my truck faster. I also used it to recalibrate my speedo for tires, change shift points, timing etc. I love it! Well worth the money.

You won't be able to do much with the chip or the programmer.

The jet chip might do something, but all it is doing is tricking the ECM to think you have more gas pedal travel than you really do.

just dont even bother. 400 will get you so much further than what those chips will bring you.

Have a custom programmed PROM along side a camshaft would make a very noticable differance. The custom chip will be pricy though. But anyhting with computers is.
