Texas, Iowa, Indiana Raise Maximum Speed Limit
Texas raises the maximum speed limit in the state to 80 MPH, Iowa and Indiana raise theirs to 70 MPH.
Drivers in Texas, Iowa, and Indiana will enjoy higher speed limits next month as legislation raising the top speeds on rural roads takes effect.
On Friday, Texas Governor Rick Perry (R) signed HB 2257 into law making 80 MPH the maximum allowable speed in the state. Rural portions of I-10 and I-20 will enjoy the new top speed, while other rural roads could see the limit rise to 75 MPH. Both the state House and Senate adopted the legislation without opposition last month.
On July 1, a law signed by Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack (D) creating a 70 MPH speed limit goes into effect. This new limit better reflects the actual speed of cars on rural highways which averages 69.8 MPH according to sensors embedded into the pavement.
In May, Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels (R) signed SB 217 into law raising the maximum limit from 65 MPH to 70 MPH in areas with less than 50,000 population. The law also raises the limit for trucks from 60 to 65 MPH, and gives a 10 MPH boost to several roads currently posted at 55 MPH. The state will begin placing the higher-limit signs on July 5.

I wish the speed limit was 80 over in NY it would filter out all the bad drivers cause there would be more stupid accidents.

It says it's only on rural roads, so not directly in the city. But I'm curious as to where exactly the government will post limits at.

So this would be like taking the back two-lane highway to Corpus instead of the main one? We were going 80 on it already.

Have you seen the prices of tolls on the roads in Indiana lately? They want you to drive faster so they can rush more traffic through those stupid toll plazas. Makes sense to me.

Either that or the cost of a speeding silently increased along with the speed limit.

i'm glad Canada isn't like the states. we don't have a province-wide standard, so every road get's judged seperatley pretty much (besides divided highways which are all 100km/h or 60mph, which is BS).
there's some roads which are lower then they should be (like the perfectly straight, perfectly flat country road near my house that's 60km/h for some reason. i never see a cop on it ever, and i take it at least once a day, so i do 120km/h down it every day...lol. it'll catch up with me eventually...), but most of them are pretty good.
it would be nice if everything would shift up 20k though, cause everyone does 120km/h on the highways anyways. cops won't even pull you over for 120 anymore unless they're in a real bad mood.

TOO GENERAL.
They pay attention to OUR speed limits and not theirs. Oh! and old people do also. I'm sure we've all been in that traffic jam that was created in a 2 lane because to old people or just people want to drive 1-5mph under the speed limit.
There.

Go to the door, I've been ringin da bell for like an hour. The 80 mph speed limit really greased the axles.
BTW Igovert, poor people care about speed limits.

Eh...that would require a complete rebuild of the US highway system. Not to mentition the drivers. And the cars.
And as someone who has been on the Autobahn...yeah...it's not that special. 95% of the drivers on it do maybe 100-120mph...it's not the super speedway free for all that it comes off as.

Thats great. I know when I lived in Iowa yu could not get anywhere in under 5 hours with their 55 limit. As for the rural road thing, in Iowa and Indiana, there is not much but that.

Speed limits in Illinois are a complete joke. Has anyone driven through Chicago? On the Interstate, in some places to speed limit is down to 45 MPH!!!! It's never above 55. Everyone does 80+, but when the cop singles you out, you have a ticket for 80 in a 55.

Are you talking about the cars with trailers speed limit? Other than that, I don't think the speed limit anywhere is 45 for all motorists.
But yes, all interstate limits are 55. It's ridiculous. Try driving 55, even in the right lane, and you'll get tailgated and passed.

In Michigan, most of our major Interstates, I-75, _69, I-94, I-96 are at 70 mph. Granted, that is once out of a metropolitan area, but we have 70's all around on our Interstates here.
