I have an ew2 1.5l carb 12 valve engine. What are some cheap mods I can do for more power. I want to know how to make an intake to fit the carb too. Thanks
Its a honda civic wagovan if it matters

You must be some kind of an engineer if you think you can improve on the Sadistic Nightmare Honda call's a Carburator.
I'm in the process of changing an engine in my 86 Civic.
It's like grabbing a Tiger by the B***s. I dont dare quit. I'll never remember where all that stuff goes.
That Vacuam Control is the most Magnamious engineering marvels I've ever seen.
I'd be willing to bet on this:
The ordinary shade tree mechanic, does not have the expertise to make any changes to that Carburator that would enhance the Speed, Power or Fuel milage.
You could simplify things by installing a Carter Y-F from an old Chevvy Six. That would be similar to adding a Toilet Bowl to your manifold.
Those old six's were 235 Cu In. So the Jetting might be a little rich, but the effect should be similar to installing a Four BBl carb.
I'm guessing here, but I think your engine would not perform very well untill after it was completely warmed up.
You keep us posted on what you intend to do. If you win, you'll have a lot of money coming in when you sell your invention as a "Kit".

Thud, why don't you just plug off all the uneccessary vacuum lines, yes they are an insane bitch.
However, the carb does not need them to run healthily....
Sdub, you can do a few mods the the stock carb, but for the price of getting it race prepped, you could invest in a nice Weber carb.
For cheap mods, you can make a cover that goes over just the inner part of your intake air filter.
Just get a peice of aluminum and cut it to size (free if you have some spare aluminum)
Take out all the uneccessary vacuum lines.
I noticed you are a member at RPR forums as well, just do a search on that Forum for Vacuum Hoses, or check this out. (This may help you too Thud)

Dave, those pictures are better, by far better, than what we would have called "Industrial Art" back in the 50's and 60's.
My Son turned down a position as an Industrial Photographer because he saw this coming. Amazed me! Here it is, bigger than life.:flash:
The Real reason I dont strip it down is Family.
If I get this little nightmare running again? And if it's a good'un? I'll drive it up to Seattle for my Sister.
They have imissions up there. It needs to be stock.
You still have the Temp Sensors in the back of the Block dont you?
If you do, couldn't you use the electric choke by connecting one Vacuam line to the Manifold. I think the Vacuam tries to pull the Choke shut, and the Thermally operated vacuam switch stops that when the engine get's up to Temp. That should help imensly with the Cold starting and Cold natured running.
Me (the shade tree engineer) would have the Cold intake flapper valve in the Air filter working, and the Hot Air intake chimney working, and the Electric/Vacuam choke, and the EGR valve, and of course the Ignition advance. That is if I were going to eliminate all that Spaghetti.
But the Imissions referee dont see it that way. To pass US emissions, it had to have all that stuff, so to pass Washington State's emissions, it's gotta have that stuff!
Down here in Louisiana we could make it work any way we could.

I see where you're coming from Thud, but do you know the specifics on Washington State's emission tests?
Like, do they just test your exhaust's output at idle and in upper RPMs?
Or do they do that AND a visual inspection?
With a visual inspection that will look to see if you have a cat., do you really think they'll be concerned about a mess of spaghetti hoses?
Because I still have a catalytic converter, and some other emissions equipment functioning, and I'm pretty sure that Texas state Emissions will pass me next year.

I dont know about Washington state's emissions test Dave. I left for Alaska in 72, and they didn't have Emissions in Washington back then.
I'll try to find out from some people I know in Washington.
In Alaska they use the California Emissions test. They Hook up your Tail pipe, and test for "HI and LOW????" plus they do a visual to see if everything is still there. Guys who run the K&N filters dont pass. The Vehicle has to be bone stock! It's all done by computer, online to 'whereever' so you cant continue to test and test and test to see if it'l pass.
I was going to put a 327 Chebby in my Jeep Wagoneer. I went down to the Referee to see what was what. He scared me to death.
You cant put an older engine in your vehicle because the Vehicle will have to pass the Emissions for the Vehicle year.
If you put a newer engine in the Jeep, it's gotta pass the emissions of the newer engine.
I gave the Jeep to a guy that had a Field full of them.

Well, if Seattle has the same smog laws as Cali, yeah there's no chance that you could run alot of mods.
In Texas, they'll give anyone an Inspection sticker as long as your not blowing a smoke stack.
They Hook up your Tail pipe, and test for "HI and LOW????"
HI and LOW is probably a test for Carbon Monoxide at idle and high RPMs.
In theory I could drop a 327 Chevy enging in my Civic and probably pass Texas emissions tests.
When I went in for my last test (unmodded) they never even looked under the hood, or under the car.
:bloated:

Can U please describe how to do the mod with the aluminum? I want to try it temporarily til i get my weber carb. Just PM it to me or email it. Thanx :sunglasse

take the cover off your filter and you'll notice the area around your filter, make a cover that just covers the center of the filter so that the area around the outside of the filter is open to the rest of the engine compartment, you can either get a some aluminum however i just got another stock cover and cut it smaller with a jig saw, works great.

Howdy.
New here.
I’ve been using the forum for info.
GREAT site!
I’m going to perform an engine swap but in the mean time I’m going to have fun with my carburetor…
I want to find more info on disconnecting the vacuum hoses if anyone has a great resource.

go for a day trip to canada :naughty: chances are that the canadian version didnt come with any, the purpose of them was cali. emmissions standards, they are part of an ancient computor system. in canada they didnt have strict standards till 1988 (BC at least)
