On your 1985 FORD ESCORT, the OXYGEN SENSOR is:
UNDER HOOD, CENTER, FRONT ENGINE AREA, MOUNTED IN EXHAUST MANIFOLD
and the instruction said this:
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Unplug the oxygen sensor electrical connection.
Remove the exhaust manifold heat shield.
Raise the front of the car and support it with safety stands.
Using the appropriate size wrench, remove the oxygen sensor.
To install:
Install the new sensor and tighten it to 22-36 ft. lbs. (29-49 Nm).
Lower the car and install the heat shield.
Attach the oxygen sensor electrical connection.
Connect the negative battery cable.

A car of that age - it may very well be alot lower down, close to the catalytic converter. You'll have to look for it from underneath.
FYI - generic online manuals/info are worthless. Spend $13 on a Haynes manual.
