Will a Monsoon head unit work w/out the trunk amp?

I just replaced the Monsoon head unit with another one that has a working cd player. The radio works great and I'm thinking about trying to use it as a base type stereo system by using a 120 volt AC to 12 volt DC power suply and a couple of speakers. Will this work or does the head unit need the trunk amp to work?
