fuel problem '01

I'm wondering if anyone has had problems with their fuel gauge. Our '01 silverado 4.8l has suddenly developed a fuel gauge problem. At complete stops, the fuel gauge reads empty and the fuel light comes on. Once the truck starts moving again the gauge reads normal and the light goes out. It does this no matter what amount of fuel is in the tank. The dealership says that they have heard about similar situations and claims that it's either the sending unit is faulty or a part in the instrument cluster is bad. Has anyone else had a problem like this?

yeah mine does it too. i mostly just ignore it. im not droppin my tank, pullin my bed, or removing the dash just cuz the gauge doesnt work right when its in park or stopped. when it starts acting up when the trucks in motion ill take some action and spend some time and money. ur not the first person to ask that on here either. i dont think anyone knows the cause of it. sorry if i was of no help at all tho lol.

the cause is a faulty fuel level sensor, part by itself about 100 bucks, its on the fuel pump.....mine did it and got worse and worse until it read full or empty all the time then i just replaced the entire fuel pump.....400 bucks and i got atleast 130000 miles off the old one, never stranded because of it and it would have soon, win win if ya ask me

My 4.8 does the exact same thing. I found that while your driving, throw it into neutral. Mine when you do this, it reads correctly until you shut the truck off. Cheap fix until I find another reason to drop the tank.

Mine does the same thing. Since I am having hard starting problems on the first try when it is cold, we have diagnosed that the fuel pump needs to be replaced. So I am going to knock out my sending unit and fuel pump at the same time. Oh yeah, before you go to a dealership or auto parts store to get the parts, try ebay. I searched on there for a fuel pump and someone had bought a fuel pump from the dealer for like $400 and that turned out not to be their problem. The dealership will not take back electronic parts so he was selling a brand new fuel pump on ebay. I got it for $126 including shipping. ALWAYS try ebay first!!!!
