converted my rex with r-134a and 1.5 cans of refrigerant. After the first can I heard the a/c pump finally turn on and cold air blew. But the psi was still not too high so I put another can in and I lost all pressure from a bottom line and now it wont hold pressure it just hisses out. Anyone know how I can get myself out of this or how screwd i am? thanks in advance.

Sounds you might just have a bad seal or a cracked hose or something. What all did you do for the conversion - I'm thinking of doing the same thing myself - want to know what all is involved.

All the conversion is is a new size fitting. You have to release what is left of the old R-12 and then release the cans into the system while the car is runnin and a/c on full blast. It was really easy and worked great until I lost all pressure. Its gettin mad hot on the east coast, you know? =)

You may have a seal that went out - I've heard the stock rubber seals don't like the r-134a - can't verify it though.

I've done it. I replaced all the O-rings, the dryer, the condenser and pipe connecting the lower connection on the condenser to the dryer (because the lower fitting seized and I striped the threads requiring the condenser and lower pipe change). I then brought it to the local A/C shop for the flush, fitting change, and recharge. It works great now. GL

did you charge the high side or the low side?

you can charge on either side if you have a real ac machine. but i dunno about those shitty DIY ones. Sounds like you have a bad schreader valve in your line, replace it, and make sure you dont get any of that shit in your eye, cause it can freeze it.

charging the high side can ruin the compressor

you charge on the high side with the car running. i never heard of it ruining the condensor, my teacher at school never talked about it and I took AC twice. The only thing to worry about is high pressures.

Does anybody know what pressures the r12 and r134a run at?

my kit came with a gauge with the acceptable pressures in a green zone. ive done this retro to all 6 of the cars ive owned and they lasted me a while and were ICE cold if done correctly. currently my civic was blowinf ice for 2 years until i swapped out my crappy Z6 for something a bit more potent...:naughty:... but then i chose to not have AC or PS so i dont need it now (and yes the one summer i dont have AC gets consecutive 90+ degree days here in MA..)
