My "Check Engine" light came on in my 96 Bonneville & I was wondering if I could get the computer codes myself without one of those expensive code readers. I have a reader for my 88 Bonneville but it's only good to 95. Also, where is the hook up for the code reader? Any help would be deeply appreciated.
Thanks

As far as I know, you have to buy the readers. They're not as expensive as they used to be. A universal reader now costs $150. The plug is on the bottom of the dash on the drivers side just in front and above the brake pedal.

You have to get a OBD-II scanner. You'll have the 16 pin connection which is normal for the 96's. That is the only way you'll be able to retrieve the codes and clear them as well. Alot of parts stores carry them, and you can even buy them on EBAY. (thats where I got my OBD-II) I bought my OBD-I from Auto-zone, and got the cartridge (Actron brand) and cables direct from the manufacturer.
