In progress - Honda S2000

Four cars already on the shelf, aiming for my fifth model now, and without delay, I will post my progress pictures. Tamiya Honda S2000, going to be yellow.
First prepared all the parts, test fitted to ensure good fitment, seems to be a decent kit, not like the Tamiya SLK that was after build up a little high with the ride height.
http://img300.echo.cx/img300/1331/p52101612pn.jpg
Next up is the fully painted S2000 body – just love the shape of these cars. Looks superb in yellow, and for those who read my “how many coats of yellow required” posting will know just how much pain I had to get this looking so good. Needs polish and wax, but the body is nicely baking in the sun at the moment.
http://img300.echo.cx/img300/5438/p52601882rr.jpg
Interior is mostly satin black from halfords. Door panels and seats will have red highlights and then painted sides with semi gloss, to simulate leather. Still not sure about that, it could change. I will this time, and I say it every time try and flock some carpet.
http://img300.echo.cx/img300/5601/p52601910sr.jpg
Painted the roof satin black, looks like a good match for a soft top, and yep, it is actually the hard top kit I’m building, but I got it cheap of ebay - £8.20 and I like the car with a black roof. Looks OK ish, so I’m not too fussed.
http://img300.echo.cx/img300/6266/p52601974ua.jpg
I had the choice of gold plated wheels in the kit or just plain chrome. Going with the chrome, the gold with yellow body will look all wrong. Also, the roof has a slight texture, I did this by spraying the paint from a good distance, to simulate the texture of a soft top.
http://img300.echo.cx/img300/6833/p52801994nu.jpg
Many small parts have been sprayed, but a lot of detailing left to go. Done the door panels, yet still not sure. I’ll do the rest of the seats, and then test fit with the yellow body. If it looks wrong, then DOT4 and restart the seats and door panels.
http://img300.echo.cx/img300/9643/p52802004hx.jpg
Under chassis has been sprayed the same as the car, all parts at the moment are test fitted, and used a metal type of paint – aclad or something, really thin paint, and looks GREAT for the engine block. Lots to do still, such as the black, washes etc.
http://img300.echo.cx/img300/1188/p52802016im.jpg
And that is it for now. This is 9 days work, and for me, this is not bad at all. Comments as always welcome.

Thanks all. Really pleased to get so many great replies. Must be doing something right :lol2:
Might be a small slow down though, as I've not got any black flocking. I ordered shades of grey and beige but no black. So need to order some from detail masters in the states. Also want to see if I can find something to make some seatbelts.
Glad you all liked the roof. Looks a lot better in black. Didn't even try it out with yellow, I knew black would look the business.
Not looking forward to masking the under chassis, looks to be a little complicated. Had problems with the engine block, but that fuel tank is hard to put tape round, so will be hard to burnish down correctly..

Done some more on the Honda S2000. The more I build this kit, the more I want the real car. Anyhow, some more progress pictures.
Some early test /dry fitting of parts, and this kit doesn’t disappoint with the fitment. All falls together very easily.
http://img284.imageshack.us/img284/5161/p52902028eu.jpg
Sprayed the exhaust parts with a mix of X11 chrome silver and X10 gun metal, to get a base cost to work with. I then used Tamiya Enamel Bronze (and yes, Tamiya Enamels are fantastic for brush painting. They stay wet for ages, and afford you much more time to play with the paint) and picked out some parts with X10 enamel gun metal, and metal cote silver. Dry brushed the whole thing with X11 Chrome silver, and this is the exhaust.
http://img284.imageshack.us/img284/5850/p53002050jd.jpg
Masking done, all prepared for the black trim on the under chassis. This was a total nightmare for me, and in the end I had to ask for some help on this forum. 360spider came to the rescue, and give me enough ideas to rip of the old mess I had done with masking tape and liquid maskol and try again.. I scrapped the idea of using maskol, and put the tape on using tooth picks, tweezers, a VERY Sharpe hobby knife and lots of time; much better this time with the advice I was given. However I was worried it would still leak or bleed through all the joins in the tape. So used maskol to cover the joins.
http://img284.imageshack.us/img284/689/p53002045dw.jpg
After the total nightmare of masking was over, I sprayed the over side of the part flat black first. This has brought the yellow deepness in, which I’m glad about, and I then used semi gloss black for the trim detailing with my airbrush on a low PSI. After 4 mist, and a final cover coat, I pulled the tape off 40 minutes later. Now my masking SUCKS..!! But this wasn’t that bad for me, and it was my first REAL masking job for an under chassis.
http://img284.imageshack.us/img284/6816/p53102061iu.jpg
All dry fitted and not looking too bad.. Considering this is only my fifth model in 15 years I’m OK with this one. It could be better, the masking was not of a very high caliber, some detail painting is not that great when compared to some of the builds on here, but overall I’m getting there.
And this is it really. Lots more to do yet, so I’ll keep working away on this kit until it’s done.

Nicely done, what kind of yellow is that?
It's Tamiya Camel Yellow - very hard to apply. Requires a lot of mist coats, or it just pulls away from the panel lines. Nice colour though.

At the stage now where I can start to assemble the chassis. Managed to take this outside picture with most of the parts dry fitted. Looks pretty good, so all OK to start fixing with glue, the brake discs are already fitted, and are a fantastic fit.
http://img111.imageshack.us/img111/7697/p60102108qs.jpg
All the parts taken off, and placed ready to be fitted, exhaust was a two piece part, so glued together with CA glue as it was hard to remove the paint around the part I needed to glue. I also glued with CA the chrome exhaust tips. I washed the engine with black ink, allowed to dry and then dry brushed with X11 Chrome silver to bring out the raised edges. I then rubbed the entire block with a lint free cloth to further polish.
http://img111.imageshack.us/img111/5971/p60102122uu.jpg
Final picture of fully assembled under chassis of my yellow Honda 2000, I also touched up a few areas on the brake calipers, added some black ink into the recess, and then allowed the entire chassis to dry. After which I dusted the entire part to removed finger prints, and admired my work..!! LOL. Picture is bad, and had to use a flash, so not a great shot, as it is now night where I am, but should give you all an idea of how it now looks.
http://img111.imageshack.us/img111/3792/p60202218yh.jpg
Now, this is perhaps some of my best work. I know that when compared to some of the guys on this forum, it just can’t compete. And my masking is not completely accurate to the build guide, but it’ll do me..
Also, no picture as it would have been pointless, as it is now night, I’ve started to polish the body. Taking a long time, as the hood has a good amount of orange peel. I’ve had to carefully sand with 3200 micro mesh. Looks good now though. When I can get an outside shot I’ll post a picture.

The attention you have paid to detailing and detail; painting the underside has paid off big time!
When you finish, remember to display it on a mirrored base so that you can see the details and not the shoeboxes I keep mine in :)

I’ve also completed the body compound and polish. Need to wax the entire body, but will wait to do that until I’ve done the black trim. I’m also going to spray the entire underside of the body flat black. I’ve also done the panel lines, but I was thinking how best to do this. Black ink might have looked too much on such a bright colour. So instead I mixed 3 parts lemon yellow in with some orange to make a darker yellow, and applied this to the lines instead. It does bring them out if you look, but it’s not like in your face. Let me know what you think, as I can always do them again a little darker if need be, but I don't really want them to dark, as I think it can look a little toy like if they are too dark.

Well, I've just had my "VERY" first real panic attack with this build. I thought the yellow paint work was ruined. I had started to detail the body, side indicators etc. I made a total mess of the first indicator, as the build guide for the euro version of the car called out for white. I put the first coat on, went ok, but didn't cover too well. Put another coat and what a mess I made of it. Tried to wipe it off, didn't work. So broke out the acrylic thinner.. Got a cloth, and applied the thinner to the cloth and wipe the white off. White was still not moving, so another wipe with thinner, oh yeah.. That was a good idea.. Still whte alright, bloody white primer. Took the white paint, yellow TS spray right to the primer.. Also went just a little over the actual indicator. Recovery plan needed. So, now they are orange, US version with a bit of black ink around the indicator to hide the primer. What total muck up. Lesson learnt there... Painfully.
http://img258.imageshack.us/img258/1504/p60202322of.jpg
Bad picture, as it is a night shot, but it looks OK ish. Not bad enough to warrant a paint strip, but not what I intended really.
I've now had to paint the front lights with a section of orange as well. shame really - it was going really well. But its now recovered from, and as I say, lesson learnt.

Not a big update this one. I do also again thank you all for the great comments. Since the horrid panic attack last night, I’ve slowed down a little and I’m now taking it a little easy. I was starting to race ahead. I’ve also become a little edgy with the body now, as I can’t afford another mistake, as I really DO NOT want to have to strip the paint. It was such an arse to apply.
I’ve done the wheel badges, applied lots of micro sol to make them conform to the chrome, as I’ve had it before where they have just floated off. Well stuck on this time. Also done the front lights. This is going to be the first complaint I make about this kit. Just how hard is it to get the chrome off to then paint the sections black, but leave the chrome for the clear orange? I had one attempt and after nearly cutting my thumb open, it was – “sod that” and it got painted as is. And they weren’t easy to paint either.
I did the rear lights, and the rear top tailgate light, and applied a few coats of enamel smoke, to darken it up a little, also dry fitted the rear window. This kit is the hardtop kit, and I still wish I had the true soft-top. But it will do.
http://img292.imageshack.us/img292/4004/p60302336to.jpg
I also re-polished the body, as there were a few light scratches here and there. It’s got a good shine now. Will do the black trim soon, but not looking forward to that at all..!!

The Honda S2000 is not dead. Rather it was me that was ill. I had to take a break as I was pretty ill, but yesterday I made a fresh start, and started to mask the entire body off ready for trimming.
http://img296.imageshack.us/img296/4162/p61202343dl.jpg
I turned the body upside down and sprayed the inside black, in attempts to deepen the yellow.
http://img296.imageshack.us/img296/7194/p61202356wa.jpg
I then carefully sprayed semi gloss black to all the car trim, and underseals.
http://img296.imageshack.us/img296/7303/p61202364rh.jpg
Once dried, I pulled the tape off, and was plesnetly shocked when I saw no tape had leaked. I also polished the body again (again..!!) and also applied some wax. It needs another wax, as I am leaving finger prints all over it, as I work in the details etc.
http://img296.imageshack.us/img296/1839/p61202371rc.jpg
Looks good with the black roof. Now, who ever decided that the rear lights were to be mostly painted on the body needs shooting. Its so damn hard to get it right. After hours of work I’ve come up with this sorry effort.. Best I could do. Still need to mount the rear light lens, and lens covers. One is on for show but not fixed down.
http://img296.imageshack.us/img296/3325/p61302381ih.jpg
And finally a side shot of the body with the trim, light covers etc.. Not bad for a total armature.
http://img296.imageshack.us/img296/630/p61302393he.jpg
That its, still lots more to do.. Will my Honda ever be completed..!! Hope so..

I turned the body upside down and sprayed the inside black, in attempts to deepen the yellow.

Every man is his own worst critic. This model is simply gorgeous! Your "attempt" on the rear lights is fantastic, so keep at it and finish! The members of AF should get to see this yellow beauty.
P.S. Congrats on not having any bleeds in your trim-painting. Even the most advanced modelers sometimes still screw that part up. :smokin:

I'm working on it, and I hope to be finished soon. I've still got a lot to do. Rear lights need some parts fixing in, plus a bit of a tidy up. Front lights need attaching, body metal transfer etc..
Also need to flock the carpets, and fix all the inside together. Also need to paint the windows etc.. Might be a simple kit, but some of the painting isn't easy. The lights are VERY hard to paint correctly, and the underchassis has a complicated fuel tank to mask off.
Thanks for the comments guys. Hopefully, this Yellow S2000 will be making it's debut in the Completed secton soon enough.

Fantastic work, to bad you had so much trouble with side indicators, I had a lot of trouble with those kind of things in the past, but now I do only one way, body gets full acrylic treatement and all other colours that go on are MM enemals, you can paint, wipe of repaint, wash, and wipe it all of again with no problem.
But this yellow of yours is perfect, I don't think I could pull it out like that with acrylics.
Nice job.

Another update, this time I’ve done the front lights. Which have not gone too bad. Hard to paint the black trim, but I did it. Looks nice, I also did the indicators orange.
http://img305.imageshack.us/img305/838/p61402489jr.jpg
But, I’ve done the rear lights, and I’ve right pi***d this up…!! I think I could have done a better job if I was drunk. I had no idea that the silver behind the rear red brake light would show once mounted. I did a test fit, and it fitted all right. I can’t get it back out, and now I’ve got a silver ring around the brake, and not a very nice silver outline showing around the rear brake lights on both sides… What a total mess..!! I left the other side in attempts to make it match.. Hasn’t worked…!!
http://img305.imageshack.us/img305/8249/p61502490qz.jpg
I tried to get the part out again, but it won’t budge. I tried blue tack, toothpicks, everything, it’s well wedged in… I didn’t push it that hard either, it’s tamiya and there fitment. They fit really well sometimes, so well you don’t even need glue. Don’t know what I can do, as I tried to paint the silver black, but this made it look even worse, as I can’t paint a perfect circle around the brake light part, so after a few goes, I gave up. Problem is I like it to be PERFECT. And this is far from perfection.
http://img305.imageshack.us/img305/9972/p61502502cy.jpg
And, to make matters even worse, I got some black paint on the rear panels, when painting the almost impossible rear light backings… So I used a bit of compound to remove it… Didn’t notice at first, but once I have mounted ( and swore at the rear light parts) and then waxed the whole lot, there is a small amount of white primer showing.. Argh..!!! This is turning to rot..!!
I’ve now decided that any attempts to fix any of this will only make it worse, it always does, so this is it. Buggered up rear brake lights, and a small burn through with the bodywork paint. It was one of those nights when I should have just walked away. But I’ve learnt from this, when it does bad, walk away and go to it the next day. Another lesson learnt.

Another update, done the metal transfers, decals etc..
http://img150.imageshack.us/img150/2260/p61602528si.jpg
I don’t know what I did wrong, but the S2000 badge on one side just wouldn’t stay on. I cut the transfer, applied and rubbed on as per instructions. Did nothing different then what I did with the rest of the transfers. In fact done this before with other builds, but it just fell off. Defective perhaps? The backing paper wasn’t stuck down to well. And it did have a small crease in it, so perhaps it was buggered from the start. I don’t know. Anyhow, managed to bodge it on using white glue.. Hope it stays on..!! What else could I do. I guess I could order replacements from Tamiya spares. I’ve got the kit again, but what a waste for just one small transfer. I would rather get a spare, or if it does fall off, just forget it..

http://img179.imageshack.us/img179/5017/p61602569tp.jpg
And a few shots of the body mounted on the chassis. A little high, as I have not clicked the body into place, so it won’t be this high when completed.
http://img179.imageshack.us/img179/4199/p61602571rl.jpg
Also managed to tidy up best I could the rear lights. Feel a little happier but this isn’t going to be the show model I really wanted.
http://img179.imageshack.us/img179/33/p61602583vt.jpg
I’ll do the windows next, then that’s it, I’m stuck until I get some black flocking. It’s on order, but I’ve not got it yet. I may as well have a go at flocking. Got to learn, as now this model is not perfect, it won’t matter much that the flocking is a test attempt. Who knows, it might turn out really great..!!

My brother said that last night. He thought it looked great, and didn't notice that the lights were showing silver paint until I told him. He thought it was meant to be like that and thought it looked pretty cool..
Thanks for the comments guys.. I was starting to get a little upset, but it is only number five in the line of models I've built since restarting the hobby after a 15 year break..

I’ve just done the front windscreen, and I’ve pulled the masking tape off, and instead of the normal leaks and bits of black paint in places I don’t want, its clean… I won’t have to sit here for 3 hours or more with a toothpick cleaning it up, and then re-applying spots of black paint to fill holes in left by picking excess paint away…
I’m impressed, it worked..!! I feel a whole lot happier now. And the S2000 badge has stuck with white glue. It hasn’t fell off.. Fingers crossed..!!
Front windscreen. Just need to attach the windscreen wipers and then install into the body.

Oh, and the body is in a plastic container, so it’s not marks on the body its just muck on the container.
I’ve also stripped the red of the seats and door inserts. It didn’t look nice, so will just spray semi gloss black.

Thanks for the top tip. I've now decided to just go with it. It was a mistake, but thankfully it's not going to ruin my model. Still want to buy the real car in yellow though.. But, this model will have to do.
Did some little updates tonight, attached the windscreen wipers, rear view mirror etc.. Not enough for a picture, but I'm hoping to fix the windows tomorrow, and I hope my flocking arrives soon, as this will soon start to delay the project.

Another update on my S2000, I keep updating this, as it’s my goal now to get this car completed. And I’m not that far from it.
Detailed the Dash, decaled and attached the steering wheel etc.. All test fitted at the moment, as I’m still waiting for black and gray flocking. I will mix a small amount of gray flocking into the black to try and match Honda black carpets.
http://img71.imageshack.us/img71/1839/p61802608ql.jpg
Another pic, but closer. The seats are not there as they are ready to be re-painted semi gloss black.
http://img71.imageshack.us/img71/9284/p61802617pc.jpg
Mounted the front windscreen, and OMG. This was almost impossible. Either I’m rubbish at putting front windscreen in, or this just wouldn’t stay in. I put the screen in a few times, before loosing my temper, and then out came the masking tape, and CA glue. Few small drops of CA, some white glue, tape and two hours later it was finally stuck in..!!
http://img71.imageshack.us/img71/4323/p61802642eo.jpg
So glad I painted the roof black. Still need to trim the rear window, will do that tomorrow, and I need to attach the door mirrors. Actually I’ve took a look at these.. They are a bit flimsy.. Not sure how best to attach them. The rear aerial was flimsy, but the door mirrors I just don’t know yet how best to attach them..
http://img71.imageshack.us/img71/6921/p61802653xs.jpg
And that’s it for tonight. Shame I can only take pictures at night. These pictures are a little darker, so you can’t see some of the detail work I’ve done. Still for those who are following this build, enjoy.

After many nights of work, the body is now completed. Tape is still there on the rear parts, as it’s holding the rear window in place as the glue sets.
Can’t believe it’s taken so long to complete the body, but overall and despite the mistakes it’s looking pretty good. Still need to wax the clear windows again as I’ve put a few finger marks in them, but I’m waiting for the glue to be completely set, so as I don’t push them out, plus I’ve got to be REAL careful now, as the door mirrors are VERY flimsy…. If I sneeze too hard next to them, it might actually blow them off… No joking..!! I applied white glue (Mircoscale) to the part and the body allowed to dry to a tacky state, and then pushed them on. Worked a treat, but they are not strong bonded..!! Wasn’t brave enough to attempt them with CA glue..

Mike,
I read somewhere about using a smal piece of rod/stiff wire to position and strengthen the attachment of wing mirrors. Maybe you could try that?

This could be some of the last updates to this build, as this entire model is now nearly completed, apart from the flocking. And I’m hopeful I will get a bag of black and a bag of gray flocking tomorrow… Fingers crossed..!! I’ve dry fitted the entire interior, to take a little look at what it will look like. Looks OK.
I decided that the red seats did not match the yellow paintwork too well, and so have just sprayed them semi gloss black. I also did the same with the door panels.
Here are some shots with the roof up, and IMO the roof does not fit too well. It would fit perfectly fine if I was to glue it down, but just resting on top of the car body it has a gap showing. I don’t want to glue it down, as I want to display the car with the roof off, with the roof next to the model in my display case. Do not worry about the front ride height, I’ve just not clicked the body in place.

Oh – Sorry if the pictures are a little dark. It’s getting dark now, and was forced (again) to use my flash.. They never come out good when I use a flash inside..
